Neil Thompson was my favourite left back for the reds. He and Eaden during the promotion season were class. Also remember Janne Salli, Finnish defender sadly injured after only a few games against, you guessed it, Leeds.
Doyle was perfectly fine as a hardworking holding midfielder. Good positioning, good tackler & good in the air. Knew his limitations & quickly gave the ball to better team mates. Fitted that Mark Robins team well but doubt he would suit the way we play football these days. If I remember right he was arrested for been in possession of cocaine & his career went downhill pretty early.
Didn’t rate Haynes at all. I think he gets remembered as been better than he was because he got 2 goals in a win at Donny Rovers & 2 at Brammall Lane to relegate the Blades. If you swap them goals to Reading & QPR I don’t think anyone would remember him fondly.
Some good mentions on this here thread. Dean Gorre top of my list. Sadly, he was at the club in the toughest couple of seasons in my time of watching us and was scuppered by injuries. If he'd played in the Prem team or Bassett's, I'm sure he would be regarded as a club legend given the quality he had. It was a pleasure to see the best of him in the first half of the 2003-04 season. Matt Carbon. Elegant defender who again struggled with injury and slowing down with age. Clever in making defending look easy, he build a solid foundation at the start of the 2005-06 which saw Reid and Kay grow in stature and us eventually get promotion. Chris Shuker. We shot ourselves in the foot when we let him walk away. I'm surprised he didn't play more of his career at a higher level. Daniel Nardiello. One of the best finishers I've seen play for us, dribbled like an old-school crowd pleaser and could pick a pass at the right time too. Probably held back by managers who'd rather a workhorse in the team - and muscle injuries. Had he been trusted in a good team and stayed fit, he was capable of 25+ a season at Championship level. Denis Souza. See vs Peter Crouch and Nicolas Anelka, 2008. Craig Ireland. Many will disagree but I thought he was a steadying influence when we needed it most and didn't have a pot to piss in. Eric Tinkler. Agree with another poster that we missed him when he wasn't there. We spent 2 seasons waiting for him to get fit, not replacing him and ending up languished in the 3rd division.
The biggest thing that comes to mind with Danny Haynes for me is how often his first touch would bounce off him about 5/10 yards away but he was still always quicker to it than the defender. I didn’t mind him though, as an impact player to bring on.
Always thought Chris Shuker was never given the credit he deserved. He tore defenders apart for us in league one, I was gutted when we didn’t get his deal over the line in the summer. I also think Antony Kay was solid for us. He was limited no doubt, but a very good player for us who was treat appallingly by Simon Davey.
I thought Chris Dagnall would have been better playing alongside a proper striker with a decent team round him. He was a good finisher feeding off scraps. When I look back through these soughts of thread we had all the right players just not at the right moments. Miller Mulligan, Chettle, Reid, Eaden Shuker, Burns, Kay, Archdeacon Liddell, Richards Not a cracking line up but all put a shift in.
One name no one mentioned that I remember fondly was a left back called Dave Booth. He was left back when I first started going in what was a very poor side but he stood out for me - probably because sitting in the west upper block E he was the closest player for half the game. Definitive left back was Phil Chambers though
