I'm not gonna say I'm a fantastic driver, I'm just cautious, courteous and careful. I make mistakes like everyone else.

But you ought to try driving around Leeds. Especially in the more run down areas, I'm pretty sure some cars are made without brakes, because people just pull out, whether there's a gap or not, and just trust your judgement to slow down. I'd never experienced anything like it until I moved to Leeds.

I often joke to my husband that me passing my test in Leeds counts for more than him passing in Cumbria ;)

If you think Leeds is bad, try driving in Bradford! I've never noticed Leeds having particularly bad drivers but someone nearly crashes in to me/pulls out on me every single journey to and from work going from Leeds to Bradford.

Re: "Wrong wrong wrong!!... Brakes NOT gears to slow car is the proper way...

In normal driving you SHOULD only change down gears when slowing down to ensure you are in the correct gear to accelerate away/move from a stop NOT as a means to slow the car. That is what brakes are for! Brakepads cost a few pounds to replace - gearboxes cost hundreds. lts less wea and tear on the engine too. For example, approaching a red light which may change to green gear down so you are not caught in a high gear if it does but use the BRAKES to slow the car.

Any professional DOT ADI would/should teach that. Advanced drivers/ assessors are in the main enthusiastic amateurs -with no real qualifications as such.It is a 'club'.

Must admit I never knew that. Details here http://www.drivingtesttips.biz/what-is-engine-braking.html

Having read that, I'm still a bit confused. Driving down a long steep hill using brakes alone is not practical because of the potential of overheating of the brakes. Some steep hills have a "keep in low gear" sign to emphasise this.

Make the distinction between slowing a car down and KEEPING the car speed down on a gradient. I agree 100% better a lower gear than cooking the brakes.

Engine braking is the perfect way for drivers to learn how to use a clutch properly, it's scary watching some peoples efforts behind the wheel.

therefore your using engine braking to slow down which is the correct way, as you have said when approaching junction etc etc. If a wagon is goin down a gradient do you think he will keep his foot on then brake or gear down and use engine braking so as not to cook the brakes, and use the brake pedal sparingly dabbing on and off. same goes for all forms i use this method on my motorbike, car and truck.

Is that right though - when going down a hill with no acceleration, in fourth for example, I get a light telling me to downshift. I never do like.

I'm an ex-driving instructor and have an advanced licence. A lot of people are crap drivers. (usually women and pensioners, adding both together is a disaster IMO)

Just for the record, I'm not perfect either. But would class myself as better than average.

Passed my test in 61. Last accident '64. Driven in places like Tehran and Lagos where there are suicidal drivers. Best thing I ever did was to pay the grand sum of £10 for a police driving course at Hendon.
