Light years ahead of Helik, best centre back in my time at Oakwell by miles. McCarthy second but some way behind. Futch should have been a regular in the top division and should have been capped for England. Outstanding player.

Wherever he goes is wherever he goes. The most important thing is we get whatever is the highest amount we're able while successfully getting him off our books.

Arjan De Zeeuw was pretty good as a pure defender. Allowed the team to play excellent attacking football whilst keeping the back door shut.

In terms of the standard of performances Pinnock is number 1 for me. I get that the quality of opposition means he can't have the title of the best defender to put on a reds shirt, but his performances were unreal in their quality and consistency.

Ian Evans was absolute class, both he & Futch were Rolls Royce defenders but Evans edged it for me & a special mention for Duncan Sharpe who would have taken out a Sherman tank

Would have been in today's game. Footballing centre halves weren't the order of the day back then.
Certainly one of my top 3.

Maybe in England I suppose, but Franz Beckenbauer weren't too shabby at it for Germany in the 60s and 70s......

Futch was a Rolls Royce in a league of Morris Minors, and he never had to get out of 2nd gear....

Other than Ronnie the best player I’ve ever seen play for us. Everything was so graceful and easy. It’s a good job he had a temper and a bit of a rep as he was far too good for us.
