He had the game of his life at Anfield..

and seemingly that excuses him then being weak on crosses, having poor positional sense and being unable to command the back line.

Why do you think Muller lost form?

I don't think SD was trying to save his job

IIRC, prior to his injury, Muller had been linked with a big money move (Arsenal?) - but he wasn't going to get that unless he got games and proved his fitness again. I imagine that was the reason SD "rushed" him back into the team.

I really don't feel Steel was "dropped" in the traditional sense.

However, when SD (finally) brought back Steele at the end of last season, he almost certainly recognised his job was on the line.

No i'm just saying that IF muller threw his teddy out now after finally being dropped then you can't really say its the same situation as Steele.

Steele only ever played when Muller was injured, Muller has played practically every game he has been fit by replacing two keepers who hadn't done anything to particularly warrent being dropped.

SD said that after the Swansea game he thought he'd get the sack so i don't think your far off with your suggestion.

Are you talkig about muller or steele?

When you say being weak on crosses, having poor positional sense and not commanding the back line? Because Muller is crap on crosses, he flaps at them and punches it instead of catching (though this has improved), his positional sense is VERY poor but his height means that isn't such a problem because he has a great reach when diving and he has had his fair share of mix ups with the defence.

His job was under threat at the time

And he kept making excuses up about our injuries, then as things got desperate he brought both muller and anderson back very quickly. I think it was a last throw of the dice by davey.

    Muller played instead of Colgan...

because he is a far better keeper!

Which isn't the point I was makingg

The point was that Muller was played at every opportunity despite our current/then number one still being fit and playing reasonably well. Steele was dropped as soon as muller was fit and despite mistakes by muller wasnt given a second chance until the very end of the season so your claim that the two keepers would have the same attitude isn't true. One has been treated a lot different to the other and that is a fact.

    Not true

Prior to his injury his commanding of the back four was excellent but his positioning has always been the same (resulting in long stretches when diving which always look spectacular) and resulting in lots of punches, in fact his punching was more frequent before his injury and at one point before he got injured people were commenting that his one weakness was dealing with crosses inside his 6 yard box.

I hear tomatoes are good for memory loss

In Muller's first 2 games back he kept 2 clean sheets. We got 15 points out of 27 after Muller's return and to start with the defence looked more assured with him behind them. He lost his confidence towards the end of the season, but lets not all have a collective alzheimers about this just to push the Steele argument.

RE: So the accounts of the two players that I gave above were inaccurate? nt

The statement about Muller not deserving to replace Nick Colgan is laughable.

Muller's the best goalkeeper I've seen at Oakwell that I can ever remember.

He had a bad run towards the end of this season, and Supertyke seemed to take great pleasure in branding him awful.

    People have such short memories.

They're both good goalkeepers and I'm chuffed Steele has signed on, but the Muller bashing is getting a bit stupid.

    This one

"Muller on the other hand was brought to the club and instantly put in the nets at the expense of the number one keeper at the time who had not really done anything wrong"

apart from being mostly ***** that is.

I don't really see your point

Are you saying that Colgans performances at the beginning of that season had been bad? I'm sure it was paul reid that cost us about 4 goals not colgan.
