yes, you're absolutely correct about the injury.....

.....remember it clearly now you come to mention it. Still don't remember any goalkeeping ability unfortunately, even though I was only 11/12 at the time, an age from which you remember all players to have the skills of the 1970 Brazil team, into which David Currie, Gwynn Thomas and Steve Cooper would have comfortably walked, and even John MacDonald would have found a place on the bench.

Without doubt, Pat Kelly followed very closely by Harry Hough, and during war years Cliff Binns pretty good too.

Greatest Reds Goalkeepers whilst I've been watching Barnsley

1) Heinz Muller ;
2) Gerry Stewart ;
3) Gary Pierce ;
4) Bobby Horn ;
5) Andy Rhodes ;
6) Brian Arblaster .
I never rated Dave Watson , or Clive Baker for that matter . Which puts me in a very small minority of one on the BBS .

I'm sorry Kev, as usually your opinion is one of those that I repect the most on this BBS, but not rating Baker and Watson?!?!??!?!?!? Sure, neither of them were that great on crosses. But Baker was a midget to be fair, and Watson was only a young lad who was knocking on the door of the England squad after our Prem season, so someone out there must have rated him. Whenever people ask me who's the greatest BFC player I've ever seen, I always reply Watson as I honestly believe he's the only one who was on his day truly world class. Even Redders, immense as he was, wasn't quite up there with the world's greatest at the time (although I do believe he should have had his chance with England, but that's another matter).

Haven't seen enough of Muller to make a judgement yet - a few TV clips is defo not sufficient evidence, though if what people say is to be believed then he's definitely something special. As for the others, I'm way too young! Andy Rhodes is the only one I even had a picture of on my bedroom wall, and even that was before my dad deemed me old enough to visit the well.......!

Only problems Watson had were that he couldnt catch , punch or kick off the floor when receiving a backpass.

The change in the backpass rule did him no favours at all.

Good morming to sunny Russia from murky Dodworth

I felt neither goalkeeper was able to command his area , Baker due to his size and Watson to his indecisiveness. However , in spite of that , I felt both were decent keepers . I just don't rate them as highly as the ones on my list .
For example , had Rhodes been the local kid in goal on our way to the Premiership and Watson been in the team when Hunter was pulling apart the 'Golden Era' side , then I think the standings of both lads amongst the fans would have been radically altered .

I've just re read my original post

As usual , it wasn't very well written . What I MEANT to say was that I didn't rate Baker or Watson as highly as the keepers on my list . Not , as was posted , I didn't rate either full stop .
I think I'll stick to posting piccies !!!

Sunny Russia, I wish!

I see your point regarding the fact that Watson played in a much better side than Rhodes. Yes, Watson could be very indecisive at times, but that's something I always felt would have got better with experience as he was extremely young. Then again, he may have stopped improving. Richard Wright, Steve Simmonson, Paul Gerrard were all supposed to go on and become England's next number one, which none of them even got close to doing.

However, I hope that you will agree with me that Ian Wardle was rubbish.

Oh yes

Also there was another local lad who only played one cup game ( away to Grimsby FA Cup 2nd Round , December 1977 ) , but was of the same standard as Wardle . I just can't remember his name . Senility is alive and well and living between my ears !

Yes , but

I've got to set off for work in five minutes . If sulking and self pity were Olympic events , I'd be a gold medal contender !!!
