Football wise I'd have to say Greece winning Euro 2004. Still baffles me that one. Poor before & poor after. Just managed to grind out result after result in the tournament. With a lot of upsets it tends to be due to a young up & comers on the rise (Becker) or a champion not taking it seriously (Tyson - Douglas). Senegal beating France in the 2002 World Cup opener was massive at the time
Liverpool beating Milan in 2005. Nevermind coming back from 3 down. This was a team of Djimi Traore's and Vladmir Smicer's beating Paolo Maldini, Nesta, Pirlo, Kaka etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think it was because Liverpool were so dominant that season. They only lost 2 games and although Wimbledon finished just 6 places behind them, it was 33 points. A month earlier was that famous 5-0 victory over Forest, when the BBC put an unscheduled highlights programme on the following night as it was such amazing football. Having said that, the two games against Wimbledon in the league were tight: 1-1 and a 2-1 Liverpool victory. Seven years earlier West Ham beat Arsenal in the final. The last time a team outside the top flight won the FA Cup, but that rarely seems to get a mention. Dunno why, West Ham only finished 7th in Division 2, Arsenal 4th in Division 1. Denmark winning the 92 Euros was a bit of a shock, what with them having been knocked out in the qualifiers. Then they lost to Sweden and drew with an appalling England team in the group stage of the finals. Then they got battered by a Dutch team in the Semis containing the likes of Gullit, Van Basten, Bergkamp and Rijkaard, but Van Basten of all people missed his penalty in the shoot out. Then they beat Germany. All very odd.
Chelsea 2 Bradford 4. Still cant believe this scoreline happened! Think I read somewhere afterwards that when Chelsea went 2-0 up just before ht that the odds on Bradford winning 4-2 were 500/1.
Liverpool were 5/2, hardly a massive shock. In my lifetime I think it has to be Greece winning Euro 2004 or Ivanisevic winning Wimbledon
No, before the match. I don't think you can class drawing a match they were only 5/2 to win as one of sport's greatest shocks. One of the greatest comebacks maybe, but not a shock result.
Or on a similar theme England winning the Headingly test against Australia in 1981 when England followed on and collapsed to 135-7 still 92 runs behind the Aussies first innings total - the bookies famously offered 500-1 on an England win Yet thanks to Botham Dilley and Willis one of the great impossible victories was achieved
Joey Dunlop winning 3 TT races in a single week . June 2000 He had been written off as only being able to win on small bikes for several years, but in 2000 he won the Formula 1 TT on his Honda VTR SP1 bike, with an average sped of 120.99 mph. He went on to win 2 more races that week. Not bad for a 48 year old fella.
I think the shock was the 2nd half comeback after being dead and buried rather than just drawing the match based on pre-match thoughts. It certainly shocked me did the 2nd half.
Who had them at 5/2? Milan were an unbelievable side at that point and Liverpool were, apart from the CL run, awful. Nevermind the final, Liverpools run to the final should be considered a huge shock. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
