I think this is the thing for most people. To get a game cancelled, without having the squad confirmed, simply shouldn't be allowed to happen. It's that simple. All kinds of theories floating round as usual, without knowing the facts. But yet again, complete disregard by the relevant authorities, for those on the wrong end of this - both the ridiculous ruling in the first place, then again by not reversing the mistake...or even acknowledging it. From the little I've read on socials, Ipswich fans' tone seems to be they've stitched us up. I know we get accused of having an 'always us' complex, but when $hit like this happens, especially after the Exeter farce, you can see why people get frustrated.
My suspicion is that they've pulled a fast one, and used documents sent to all players in the Jamaica provisional squad, knowing full well it wasn't a confirmed selection. They likely don't want to play an in form team, without their two attacking players that Wales called up. On the flip side, they've not conceded a goal in seven games, and win, lose or draw, tonight will likely take a lot out of the players. Following that up with a game against such an in form defence would've been very difficult. As ever, the biggest losers are the fans that had bought, or were planning to buy tickets. Some ipswich fans will have made arrangements for travel, accomodation and maybe even time off work.
So Ipswich pulled a swifty to get it called off, but were only able to with the guaranteed incompetence from someone at the efl who didn't check the facts. We could have done the same with our current ever present Welsh duo, Lewin Nyatanga and Danny Nardiello along with our Jamaican playmaker Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Let's get Ali Dia in as efl liason officer.
Two things I think it a positive it's a Tuesday night under the lights with probably less away fans and it proves that at least they a little bit scared of us upper hand on both front roll on the 25th April .
The thing being that the 3rd player wasnt even named yet we all smelled a rat at the time. Someone somewhere is really not very good at their job. Just cannot understand why nothing bigger in the press has been made of this or that we (Bfc) havent commented on the matter. Anyway karma is a wonderful thing.
Ipswich are the form team of league 1 over last 6 games. The issue here is like others have also said is how was it allowed.
"As per the requirement, Clubs are able to request a postponement if they have 3 or more players called up for International duty. Ipswich Town have had the required number of players called up and therefore have been able to request the postponement. The EFL review the call up papers for each player when these requests are made and all players meet the requirements for a postponement."
It's all very odd, how could they present papers showing a player had been called up for international duty when he hadn't? I guess they could have just written one themselves. Dear Greg Leigh We'd like you to play for the Jamaican football team. We think you're dead good at kicking and running and that. Meet us in a government yard in Trenchtown next week. Bring a yellow T-shirt and a ball. This is an entirely legitimate offer, honest. Yours The Jamaican Football Team Manager PS We ran out of stationary so had to use Ipswich Town letter headed paper.
@YTBFC have the club questioned this? Appreciate you may not be able to say on a public forum, but it does seem a little ‘murky’
Apparently Jamaica advised all clubs of a provisional squad (he didn’t make the actual squad named afterwards) and included in the info all the travel requirements and Ipswich took this as confirmation. If any of the above is remotely correct the issue sits with EFL for allowing it.
You're right, it's a public forum. As far as I know, this lad (who has played twice for them this season) was initially named in a bigger squad that was then chopped down. Does that still count? I dunno. Will 'we' have raised the question? Absolutely. If I was John Smith from down the road, I'd probably say that it's clear that Ipswich feel that they're better off kicking this game back a month, when they'll have their Welsh duo available. I think they've openly said as much online. Sure I read something along those lines from McKenna (their coach). John Smith would certainly question this, in terms of a postponement based on Leigh not actually being called up. He'd question it even if he had been called up, based on the fact that Greg doesn't play for them. It'd be like us saying we are short-handed because Fabio Jalo is with the Portugal U18s. A player who isn't really impacting the first team. I think John Smith would also suggest that Ipswich didn't fancy it right now. Perhaps they think it'll all be sorted (promotion etc) by the time we meet? John would also reckon that this won't have been forgotten by the Barnsley players and staff. He also imagines that fans would remember it. And that in a month's time, it will add itself to what looks like it's now going to be a pretty pivotal old game.
This could well prove to be Duff's team talk for the Ipswich game, in a similar vein to what Danny Wilson did after Mark McGhee's disparaging remarks about us during the run-in to our Premier League promotion, when he pinned up the newspaper article about it. As a manager once said, "I'll tell you now, I'll love it if we beat them, love it."
The team talk from the Wednesday match onwards. They will all be so determined that by the time we play them we are still in contention.
I was thinking that we would have had to agree to a proponent aswell and could have objected.. but obviously not, looking more like.. your told it's off, so it's off
Can't wait for the bairnin' from Ipswich if one of the Welsh lads come back injured... "It's wrong we should lose players to international duty at such an important stage of the league season...."
