A65 is Kirkstall Road as mentioned above, so you would miss most of it out that way. I think it is a bit further but will be faster moving, A658 should be pretty much clear.

The advantage to that is that it passes through Greengates rather than Calverley. Calverley is a lovely place but is an absolute nightmare at that time. I used to drop a colleague off a couple of miles down the road in that direction (and then back to join my normal route) when she'd had surgery so couldn't drive for a while and it added well over an hour onto my journey. I think it's the route I'd take as I can't stand stop start traffic, I'd rather go further and be driving normally for the most of the time. I think the only traffic you might face is as you get near Leeds Road but it should be ok other than that for the most part. I'd allow around about an hour after leaving the motoway no matter which way you take to be honest just to be sure.

Worst thing about living in Leeds. And they seem to randomly close city centre roads and ring roads on a rolling basis to take half an hour of your life you could have done with

 

At 6.30pm-6.45pm? he's not leaving Barnsley until 6pm.

 

That's true. I'm thinking about the traffic there at 6pm rather than leaving Barnsley then which would give it chance to mostly clear. I think he'll get to the match in time barring accidents as an hour and a half should allow for traffic whichever route he takes.
