The best player to wear a Barnsley shirt in my many decades of watching the Reds. I saw him looking in a freezer in Asda about 12 years ago and told him he had been my hero. He smiled and said I looked too young. We chatted for about 15 minutes, and he introduced me to his wife, who said Barnsley people had always been good to him.
A pity that Conor Hourihane took no notice of "And here's to you Conor Hourihane, Barnsley loves you more than you will know" at Fulham that day....
Very true but I'd never blame Conor for leaving. I'd have done exactly the same. He set himself and his family up for life with that move. One of my all time favourite players but Ronnie, for all of us that saw him will always be the best of all.
I don't understand this policy blindness in not considering older players. Surely it's a case of finding diamonds amongst the rough, regardless of age? (unless they are in their last competitive year or so).
Happy Birthday to the best Barnsley player I ever saw, and also after meeting him a really top bloke! ( Still regret never getting his bloody autograph all these years on! )
I was only a nipper when Glavin was playing and whilst I have memories of some players of that era I sadly cannot remember watching him play. However, I do very clearly remember the crowd suddenly coming to life and picking up that something was happening. It's like I can't remember watching him play but I can remember listening and feeling the impact he had on the fans. And that noise is part of what got me into being a Red.
He used to pop into The Wilthorpe every now and then when my Dad was a regular running a pub quiz there, and they talked a lot. It never occurred to me to arrange to be there one night so I could meet the great man as well. Mind you it would have been tricky as I was living 200 miles away at that time
That's exactly the effect he had on fans. Your memory serves you well in that respect. An on-form Adam Hammill had a similar effect.
That atmosphere was played out every time he got the ball in space or in the oppositions last third . It was a crescendo of noise and expectation with every step he took with the ball resulting in something special every time (or at least that’s what it seemed as I remember it ).
Greatest player never to play in the top tier of English football. How we held on to him I'll never know. Happy Birthday sir.
