Duncan's son is a mate of mine (I was his best man), and Duncan recently celebrated his 80th birthday!

I never saw him play, imer red and madmark62, but by all accounts he was one hard b*stard.

Steve Cooper (Rest in peace) was a total nut job. Mal Shotton as mentioned was hard as nails.

    David Geddis.

He's not talked about a lot on this forum, he's a bit of a forgotten man, but he was a sensational player. 24 goals in 45 appearances for us and as scary a player as you can ever imagine coming up against. He was ferocious.

It's bizarre that we ever signed him. He was third choice striker for Aston Villa, behind Gary Shaw and Peter Withe, and played whenever they were injured, suspended or out of form. Villa won the first division title in 80-81 for which Geddis got a medal and then the European Cup the following year where he received another medal. He was on the bench for the final when Villa beat Bayern Munich 1-0. Chances are he would have come on late on when Withe and Shaw were tiring, but Jimmy Rimmer was injured early on so Tony Barton had to bring on Nigel Spink. Only one substitution allowed in those days. Andy Blair was also a sub that night, who came on loan to us in '87.

Geddis had previously won an FA Cup winners medal with Ipswich when they beat Arsenal in '78, Geddis supplying the cross for the only goal. He was only 19 at the time. So, in September of 1983, little old Barnsley of the second division signed a centre forward with a FA Cup winners medal, a League Champions medal and a European Cup winners medal to his name. And he wasn't some clapped out old journey man getting a last pay day. He was just 25 years old. He was ******* brilliant.

I'm not exaggerating here, it's like us signing Man Utd's third choice striker this summer, who happens to be Javier Hernández. It was that bizarre and Geddis was that good. And, in keeping with the theme of this thread, he was a right hard b'astard too.

What a player he was! As you say, it was incredible that we ever had him play for us. Even more incredible that no-one ever mentions him on here. A fantastic finisher, who always gave 100%, particularly tackling. Oh and he was quite a cutey (for the female of the species such as me!). Thanks for reminding me about him.

    The club needed the money

Gates had been falling for a while, but then dropped off sharply due to the miners' strike. Birmingham City offered £80 000 for him and the bid was accepted. Apparently, the rumours from those claiming to be in the know at the time were that Geddis was quite happy at the club and wanted to stay.
