Made history for Toronto by scoring their first ever league goal ....... then getting their first ever red card in the same game
Declan Rice played for the senior Ireland team in a few friendlies; Grealish played up to u21 level then switched to England U21. Eric Dier was born in England to English parents but could have played for Portugal as he moved there aged 7, if you listen he still has a bit of a Portuguese accent when he speaks. Sterling was born in Jamaica, Callum Wilson has Jamaican grandparents and Marcus Rashford’s gran is from St Kitts. Kalvin Phillips could have played for Jamaica or ROI, Kyle Walker Jamaica. Saka is English born to Nigerian parents. Jude Bellingham has an Irish grandparent. Harry Kane could have played for Ireland. I believe Trent Alexander Arnold could have played for the USA. There’s actually loads. The more fun bit would be to name the Wales players that didn’t qualify to play for England… can’t be many!
We live in a globalised world. I'd imagine most players are eligible to play elsewhere. All of Maguire, Rice, Grealish, Bellingham, Philips, Kane and Wilson could have lined up for Ireland. You can keep Maguire
Because he went to school in England. Apparently his grandfather is from Sierra Leone so he could have played for them.
MR - Thanks -- Getting to Qatar was a huge achievement for Wales-Cymru and the manager and players are very well thought of. I don't think the Welsh players thought that if they were better they could play for England. Some may have been good enough but would have taken a pragmatic view that they weren't selected for England. There are plenty of English players who were good enough to play for England but aren't selected. I followed the team through the qualifying rounds and there was total commitment from all players and massive support from the supporters.
Isn't that question viewed through an 'English' lens. Wales has a population of just over 3 million, I'd think they're happy that of the players that are good enough to be picked for their national team, some have made a genuine choice to pick Wales.
That's the point though isn't it? That it might not a genuine choice but a choice made because they'd rather play international football for a country that they feel no great affinity for than no international football at all.
I guess the players who 'qualify' to play for Wales-Cymru would make it known to the Welsh F A their interest and the F A + manager would take it from there and the country would end up with its best 11 team players. From what I saw all the Welsh player were totally committed and would be proud of their Welsh Heritage, For the players there is the experience/kudos of playing on the International stage.
There was Mick Mac of course, Barnsley & Yorkshire & England. But he realizes he's never going to get picked so he uses the backdoor entrance into International football. And then whooosh, he's magically a lifelong paddy all of a sudden. Its ridiculous that all players get to choose what country to play for these days, as that wasn't possible at one point.
Every fecker I would imagine. Could claim to a link with ancestry or residency. Adam and Eve and all that cuz.
I had a great holiday in North Wales as a 12 year old. I passed between Crewe, Llandudno Junction and Chester at regular intervals on my Railrover ticket. Although I'd passed through that much. I never felt Welsh. I couldn't represent them because I'd walked across the shale under Llandudno pier or swooned Myfanwy in Deganwy. It wouldn't be right.
Kieffer Moore played for Wales but he could have held out and represented his bigger home nation, Torquay.
You only have to go to school in England to play for England schoolboys. No matter where you are from. There is no international affiliation.
My Czech born grandmother survived time in a Nazi Concentration Camp and came to the UK in 1945 - her home village having been destroyed. I feel a tremendous affinity for her birth country (am proud to bear a Czech first name.) It is wrong of you to assume that because someone may only have one Welsh grandparent they don't/can't have affinity with Wales. You don't really know. If they choose to play for Wales they shouldn't be challenged re. making a 'genuine choice.' I wonder, would you suggest the English players of Afro-Caribbean heritage have no 'great affinity' with England.
Didn't we used to have a kimrooo wannabe called Steve Lowndes ?. Back in about '87, in the days of Gray and Wylde and Beresford and Futcher.
