There is no technicality! there is the law, the same law that states you are liable for a penalty if you exceed the speed limit also states they must tell you about it in 14 days.

i repeat im not arguing that anyone breaking the law should be let off. just the law upheld. all laws not the ones you find morally ok.

 

My view hasn't shifted.

But let's hope they pay for their captured offence to the authorities or a good cause. I'd hope anyone morally sound would find that ok.

 

I'm sorry, but I have probably broken the speed limit, and therefore the law, every other day for the last 50 years. I reckon most drivers do.
I don't propose to hand myself in anytime soon though.

 

Maybe refresh your memory as regards speed limits
If god forbid you knock someone over or crash into another car because you're speeding it will ruin not only their lives and that of their family and friends but your own too

 

Very true Helen, but I'm not talking about racing around like Lewis Hamilton used to do before he got Coronavirus. And I bet everybody who likes your post, assuming they drive, has done the same, like going past a 30 sign at 33 whilst slowing down, speeding up as you see the end of restriction sign, etc.

 

Totally agree Helen. About 10 years ago now I had a non fault accident. I was driving round a blind left hand bend, to be confronted with a car on the wrong side of the road doing 40 mph (in a 30 zone) and hit me head on. I was having physiotherapy for about 2 years afterwards and still have flashbacks even now when I go round a blind bend.

Speeding is 99% a victimless crime, that’s why people are wary of cash cow gatso’s, however the 1% far outweighs any argument at all. There’s no need to speed, there’s no need to put your self or others in danger.

 

I agree everyone will have speeded at some point. But cameras are located at points where there have been fatal.accidents, theres a reason they are placed where they are

 

I'll gladly agree with you on the 2nd paragraph ;-)

 

Cameras aren't placed to stop you speeding, they are there to catch you and fill the coffers of the govt. It's a form of taxation as anyone driving loads of miles will be caught at some stage. I'm not condoning speeding and I genuinely try to adhere to the speed limits but as a mere mortal I find it impossible to do this 100%. Instead of fixed cameras if mobile ones were employed but warning notices put in place telling drivers that they were operating in a certain spot then that would deter most people but by doing this no revenue would be raised, and that isn't what the govt wants.

 

Depends on how fast you were going, how many MPH you were over? You could question your cars calibration could be off or the camera is off, if it's a few miles per hour. 17 years without a penalty shows on the balance of probabilities that you are a careful driver.

I was 8mph over the limit (38 in a 30) so it wasn't even close to be fair. I believe I'm still within the limits for a speed awareness course as a first time offender but no excuses, I shouldn't have been speeding. I'm going to wait for the paperwork to come through and then weigh up my options.
