Was it the testimonial of Joe Joyce when we played a Man U XI? One half was a Barnsley "all stars team" and the other the current team?
Could have been that one, yes. I'd forgotten we'd played Man U in the first half. Ferguson came didn't he, but did Man U select any proper players?
I think that was the last testimonial I went to. Brilliant night. Someone should suggest it to Bobby Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
It being 24 years ago.... my memory is a bit hazy! I think there were one or two who at the time were known and a lot of kids... who could well have been the likes of Martin, Sharp and so on I think Speedie Banks and Glavin all played for us. Barrowclough might have turned out too? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BARNSLEY-...ia_Football_Programmes_ET&hash=item4182d49de1
24 years ago! ******* hell. I feel old now. Pretty sure Ian Evans played too. Can't remember who else, apart from Joe Joyce, obviously. I do remember the second half was a lot more fun than the first, which is kind of my point really. At one point Speedie set up Glavin who missed the chance, so Speedie started giving Glavin some pointers. David Speedie telling Ronnie Glavin how to score a goal. Made me chuckle.
Scary isn't it? If you want to feel young though, visit Devon (which i just did!) Throw that back to today.... who would you have (who is still able to play to some degree) in an all stars BFC team? Slim pickings from the last decade for those who have finished playing.
Bruce Dyer is a shoe in, what with him being one of Bobby's mates and still a fans favourite. Bobby Hassell has said his greatest memory while playing at Barnsley was the play-off final, so I would imagine he'll invite a lot of those players. Let's be reight, it wasn't a great team, but it was a great day and it would be nice to see those lads again. I think they achieved more than they had any right to really, we didn't have a lot of quality, but we achieved promotion anyway. Be good to get 'em all back for Bobby's day to celebrate that.
The players who appeared in play off final and wembley FA cup semi would be obvious choices, though maybe not the most popular with fans. But maybe thats a general thing. Personally i have more connection with the players from the 80's and 90's than the last decade. Go on.... name your all star bfc team then (that coud actually play)... let's help Bobby sort his testimonial out ;-)
Players have there own testimonial committee who arrange functions leading up to a match.Bobbys already praised the club and the board for there cooperation.I think to blame the club is wrong.
Eric Winstanley's testimonial was the same. Current side first half, Premiership team second. Won 1-0 with a Redfearn screamer. Ferguson came and brought a decent side as well.
It'll be players/friends of Bobby's I'm sure. The likes of Dyer, Stones, Lawrence, Foz, Hayes, McCann, Butterfield. Although with it being 4th May, some may not be available. I dunno. Glad it's that date though. It's the day we stopped up at Huddersfield and me and my better half's anniversary.
