At half time I tried to get to see my friend to share some KK Ks and the steward wouldn't let me through. I insisted that I was only going to share my sweeties but he took umbrage and forced my hand up my back and led me down the stairs with a view to showing me out of the ground.
This was raised to a higher level and I received a most friendly and apologetic letter from Chris Patzelt, club secretary at the time, which I still have.
The other side of it was that the person I was going to share my choccies with was Ian McMillan, the bard of Barnsley. He thought it was hilarious.
I think the club was embarrassed.

And yet I’ve been taking a flask of Bovril in for years in Winter and no one has ever said a thing. Could do far more damage throwing a flask or even hitting someone with it.

All sounds ott and not condoning said steward, but surely you knew you weren’t allowed in the ground with ale?

Not in some grounds if you look at the laws - did anything ever make sense at football

Ground regulations I'd guess rather than laws.

Don't know about the egg-chasers, but in Rugby League - in England and in Wales - you can drink alcohol sitting in your seat or standing on the terraces.

Well it's been the law as long as I can remember so why did you suddenly think you could drink alcohol in view of your seat? And then you tried to argue with the steward with "I’m not causing no bother, there’s no one here it’s a friendly". Why would you do that when they'd told you you can't do something?

The first Steward who told you to do what you want was wrong, you can't do what you want. I'd say that your only complaint here is that this steward allowed you to take your alcohol to your seat, every other steward did what they were supposed to do. Maybe a little heavy handed but that was probably caused by someone saying they wanted to continue drinking it and there's not many people here etc

Reminds me of an incident at Oldham in the late 80's... a pensioner had his flask confiscated for "being a potential weapon"
Mind you; it was during the giddy NCIS period
