Sat next to a Rangers fan at a wedding recently

Said he regualrly organises trips over to Northern Ireland to watch football games. Says he needs to really plan his routes and only pick reputable coach firms, because if they broke down in the wrong part of town there'd be trouble. One of the first times he went over they got lost and stopped to ask directions, the bus got bricked ... proper mental.

    Aye in Scotland!

Constantly having to watch England games in Scotland, not such an issue in Glasgow but watching the England v Sweden World Cup game in Aberdeen last summer was particularly interesting. The indigenous population took to wearing Sweden shirts as well as their kilts?! For some reason they took offence to my comments of “aaahhh bless” when they celebrated Sweden’s last minute equaliser.

I had a similar thing in Wales when England played Argentina in Japan,

loads of Argie shirts in the boozer.

I gave them some right stick after the game , especially as they had probably spent 2 weeks dole money on the shirt.

    Losers!

My old boss was chairman of Huddersfield town. Knowing I was a Barnsley fan, he asked if I would like to sit in the directors box to watch Huddersfield V Barnsley. Barnsley scored first through a Mick Butler header. I forgot where I was and gave it a full on celebration that was cut short by a sudden realisation. Town went on to win 2 - 1 and I was forced to clap politely along with the rest.

    With home fans away

A mate who is a Birmingham season ticket holder got me a seat for the play-off semi final in 2000. A steward let go in the away end at half time thank god, a very unpleasant experience, most threatening atmosphere I've experienced at a match.

And having re-read the original thread...

    ... I obviously didn't regret all of those !

One other I remembered, being in the Gelderd Road end when we beat Leeds - can't remember the year but it was long before the season they won the Championship.

Man Utd Cup game at Oakwell......

I ended up gettinga ticket in the United section with two United-supporting mates of mine. Stood near the tunnel and found it amusing to see a couple of people i know abusing the Mancs.

Was once in London with a mate

visiting his brother for a week. On the Saturday Leeds were playing at White Hart Lane. Both mates were Leeds fans so we decided to get tickets for the game, in with the Spurs fans obviously as that is all we could get from the ground. We managed to stay incognito for the first part of the game, despite a nearby thug trying to get us to join in with the Spurs songs, but then Lee Chapman got pushed on to the asphalt and smashed his nose open. There was a decidedly nasty atmosphere then and because we still weren't joining in the thug and his mate had us rumbled. We spent the next 15-20 mins being surrounded by some rather angry cockney chaps who were threatening all sorts of nasty things after the game. We managed to get a coppers attention and asked if we could move into the away end (we were right next to that end) but he wouldn't have it. They did keep a few coppers near us for our own protection though and walked us out of the ground. Absolutely crapped ourselves, and had to do a runner to the tube station as some of the cockerny chavs followed us. To be fair we fooking shat ourselves. When I look back I wonder why I put myself in that position just to watch a dirty leeds game. I was only 18 though.

Grimsby away in the promotion season, I think we won 3-2,scored in the last minute, although cant be sure as i was only about 5/6 at the time. Can remember getting the dodgy eyes though. Was gunna sit in the Huddersfield end if we couldnt have got away tickets for the play offs, lucky we didnt.

Man City away in 3rd round of Cup at Maine Road

Barnsley sold their 7,000 allocation pretty quick and I worked with a Man City fan. He got us 3 tickets in a so-called "Safe area" up near the top of the stand opposite the Kippax. All was OK for a while, depite the Yorkshire accents I think they had us down as neutrals. Then when Man City scored and they all jumped out of their seats, we were just sat their with long faces shaking our heads at the crap defending (nowt changes). Second goal went in not long after and the same thing again. A couple of guys sat 3 or 4 seats behind us had sussed us. They came along the row behind and yelled in our ears "Fook off back to Barnsley yer yorkshire tw@ts". We ignored them but were expecting a belt round the lug-holes for our troubles. Suffered constant abuse the rest of the game and decided to hang back a bit after the game. Half a dozen were chanting "Come & have a go if yer think yer hard enough" I'm a bit soft when the odds are 50:50 but at a minimum 2:1 we decided to chicken out. Waited about 5 minutes then worked our way across to an exit about 4 away from ours. As we came out of the stand, there were about a dozen nutcases at the exit of the staircase we should have come out. Outfoxed by the more intelligent old-stagers. I wouldn't have minded but they bloody won. Once upon a time you only got a bit of aggro if you'd lost.

Leeds away 1983, took my girlfreind, told her

not to shout for the reds etc, when the teams ran out she asked which was Leeds, i thought i was on a winner, she wouldnt break my cover, anyway in the 19th minuite or so McCarthy rose above the Leeds defence and headed into the goal, BY THE TIME I LANDED the goal had been disallowed, and the cover was blown, an uncomfortable 70 mins followed

Arrrrrrrrr loads of times.................seen a few stabbings and the like

    Them were the days...................
Good owd set too, but there int nowt now is there, the police have it all sown up
The police have spoilt a good day art
Probably I'm too old now to be getting involved

Weapons I've seen used inside football grounds - machetes, knifes, hook on arm (no hand), pellet gun, snooker balls, balls of fire (probably petrol soaked paper), metal stars (all the rage at one point), darts, bolts, skip loads of bricks.

I think its rubbish when weapons are used - chuffing London clubs introduced um

What thugs beating each other up just because they happened to support a different team ?

being scared to say anything because you have the wrong accent ?

I grew up in those days when getting your 'kicks' was by giving a kicking. I hope we've put those days behing us forever.

It was tribal and nothing to do with football, the posturing, the chants, innocent people being caught up in surges of violence, not for me , no thanks.

    (prawn sandwich anyone ?:) )
