All the players you're referring to can also play football though. They are not just 'defensive', which is a subjective term anyway. All midfielders should be attacking and defensive depending on whether we have the ball. There's no point having some clogger in midfield who can make one or two challenges if he can't play football when he actually wins the ball. It's much easier to learn the defensive aspects of the game than to learn to be a better footballer.
Agreed. And I'm sure Hecky would be absolutely ecstatic to only have four central midfielders. Hourihane, Scowen, Morsy and Moncur would do just fine and it is nothing to do with Hecky why at least three of those four aren't still here when they should be. Hecky didn't completely balls up the Morsy deal nor make low take-it-or-leave it offers with no negotiation to those whose contracts were expiring. It also stretches belief to think that the transfer fees, signing fees and three year contract costs for this host of midfielders we have brought in do not dwarf the sums needed to make good extension offers when the time was right for Conor last summer.
. coquelin kante dier wanyama gueye matic These players don't get goals, not many assists. But they are worth the body weight in the most valueable gold. Kante won the prem two years on the bounce. Most important player at a team like Leicester. Most important player at a team like chelsea that play in a total different way.
All miles better footballers than any defensive midfielder we'd be able to play. Hence we need players who can do more, like Morsy/Scowen/Houriane
Better to be a good midfield player who can defend. Give me a Neil Redfearn over a 'handbrake' every time.
When we were going well under hill we had perkins. He was brilliant for us with Drinkwater and Butterfield central with o'brien and Vazte wide. He was as important as any of the other players. Yes but lets not look at what managers that have proper top class trophies coming out of the arse.
Part of the reason why Hourihane was so important to us last season was the defensive side of his game. He demonstrated that you can do the defensive stuff as well as getting plenty of assists and goals. When he first came to us he was lightweight and looked like he was incapable of managing the defensive aspects but we gradually coached it into him and under Hecky he flourished as the best all-round midfielder in the division. There's no reason why Hecky can't do the same and turn one of our new "attacking" midfielders into a box to box dynamo. Personally I think it might be Mcgeehan.
I've been thinking along similar lines as well. Another unknown is, do any of these players we have brought to the Club have any sizeable sell on value.? Those we sold previously were brought through the Academy or were signed by Wilson or Johnson. Our fears when we sold all our best players last time round might therefore not be repeated. It might prove to be the case that we will have this group (probably apart from Yiadom) together for a couple of seasons at least maybe longer. My mate went on Saturday. His verdict " if we don't get up to speed quickly, we could be in for a long hard old season." I personally still feel we will be OK.
Did Hecky even try to explain why he put Potts in there, instead of one of our only experienced star players ? (Hammill) I don't think we can judge Sessi that much Redstar, as he was unlucky with the injuries last season and having him back and fit again feels like another new signing. Id pick him just ahead of Williams although I see what the appeal to Williams is and why we've brought him in. People are suggesting Joe Lolley at Hudds but hes yet another midfielder and surely we've exhausted all of those options now.
Why don't you read what other people write and actually listen to what Hecky has said you complete berk? No you won't though will you, doesn't suit your agenda. Hecky at no point has said he doesn't believe in midfielders doing their defensive duty, midfielders shielding the defence and/or doing any of the jobs the players you get a lob on over like Kante. He just doesn't believe in the term 'defensive midfielder'. He wants a midfield player to do an all round job. If you think ngolo Kante doesn't also have a good range of passing; if you think they don't have anything going forward at all you don't watch the games you say you do (or don't understand them); they don't get goals - did you see the cup semifinal? Matic hit a worldy. They might not get many but they contribute. I also love how you prove your point by quoting footballers who would probably all sell for multiple tens of millions minimum.
You totally miss the point. As per ******* usual. Perkins was tripe. He was an extremely limited footballer, with his limitations hidden by having two much better players with him. Once they'd gone he was awfully exposed. In any case, you are mentioning Keith Hill in the same breath as "managers that have proper top class trophies coming out of the arse". All the while, you "forget" how well we've done since we ditched 4231 and perhaps more importantly, technical football with small technical players.
He stood out because he had blond hair and ran about a lot. That's why people noticed him. As a footballer he was as much use as a joke book at a funeral.
Total Hemmsy ******** Bingo. That combination only ever started three games together for us; at Derby where Perkins went off injured after 33 minutes at 0-0; at home to Palace where Drinkwater went off injured at half-time at 1-1 and at home to Ipswich where Drinkwater again went off injured after just 17 minutes and we lost 5-3.
