I'd be interested to see what percentage of goals came from a set piece or break down after a set piece, and how much came from open free flowing play. My perception (pre Jan certainly) was a huge reliance on corners and free kicks and why Hourihane was so extremely integral to us. I recall Morsy setting up a few ones on ones v Fulham, but cant think of two many where the midfield were part of build up and assist in open play. Ultimately I want a midfield that can defend and create. Whether thats as a unit with 3, or 2 individuals, it matters not to me. I just expect good football with intent to get stuck in, and not be defensively minded for no obvious reason.
Yes, real madrid wants are bored to tears of winning trophy trophy. Bayern the same and celtic fans aren't sure what do do with themselves going for yes another double.
I think much is the intent how you use it. A 4-5-1 that can shift to 4-3-3 at pace could be fantastic to watch. But its all about intent. The times we've had 4-5-1, we've commonly not had much intent to attack at speed
NEWSFLASH; Barnsley FC are not Real Madrid or Barcelona The players they have are just slightly better than ours. If you can't see this then you truly are a total and utter waste o snap. Whenever BFC have played 4231 it's tended to yield boring tedious technical football a la Lee Johnson
So basically Hemsworth Tyke is wrong because we're not good enough for defensive midfielders, we're not allowed to even think about emulating a system or give examples of a system that Chelsea use because they're better than us, we need midfielders to do absolutely everything and have no strengths or weaknesses and being technical/defensive minded is too boring?
Why are we ******* about with this buying players to develop and sell crap? Hemmsy has hit the clit on the head. We should fold the club, and instead put on busses to Celtic every weekend to see them win all the impressive "Trophy Trophy's"...
I'd rather see us play the most boring/technical/defensive football you can imagine and win 1-0 than see a fantastic 5-4 defeat.
No he's wrong because; A) he wants to pillock Hecky without listening to what he says because it fits his agenda B) he wants us to emulate Chelsea etc playing 4231 with players nowhere near the same skill level C) 4231 in the past for us has coincided with boring (technical you say) football D) we've done quite well without playing 4231 up to press E) summat not complimentary F) he doesn't need you to defend him
It's like when people say "We need a goal scorer" and someone replying "Well we're not Man City we can't have Sergio Aguero" It makes no sense, it's about levels. Yes, we're nowhere near the same skill level as Chelsea but guess what? We don't play in the same league as them. It's like if you were a boxing coach and telling your fighter never to go for the knockout simply because he's not Anthony Joshua. It makes no sense saying that Chelsea have a better skill level than us. "Barnsley are not Real Madrid or Barcelona" right.. And we won't be playing teams that are Real Madrid or Barcelona either.
So why does it make sense that he brings them up as though we should be emulating them? You've fallen into the trap of defending him
Your right, it IS all about levels. Unfortunately were at a level where said goalscorers cost £10m+, and we don't have that. Were spending money on players that are not tried and tested, where most of the other clubs are spending mega bucks on much better players.
When we signed Sam Winnall, we knew that he wasn't going to be Thierry Henry because we know we're not Arsenal. But we thought he'd do a good job for our level and he did, a great job even. His point isn't that we should sign the next N'Golo Kanté it's that signing some defensive midfielders could be beneficial, and mentioned some other teams as examples.
''Midfielders, we've got too many, we've got too many centre midfielders they all want to play so it's the balance of the squad that's not right. It's like anything else you don't need too many things of one type'' then he goes on to talk about answering questions.
To be fair, his point is that he doesn't like Hecky, as it always is. He has taken one of his irrational dislikes to the bloke so whatever he does, he will find criticism. Its only the same as Houriane, Winnall and Roberts, who he spent all his time slagging off. Now they have gone, he will turn his attention to someone else ...
I think the point people are making is that better players can adapt more easily to more complicated formations. Another thing to bear in mind is that the top teams can afford to handpick players to fit into systems. Further down the leagues it would mean playing some players out of their best position.
