Eat raw eggs? Blimey!

I could run up the steps to Dodworth library, listening to music by Bill Conti.

Give me a few months of dieting and fitness training and I'll look like a new man. Given what the present one looks like, it's bound to be a huge improvement!

The plot thickens....'She Who Must Be Obeyed' it turns out wants to go...

to ASDA at Wakefield to get some jumper/cardigan or some-such-which and thought she had more chance if she could get me to the curry restaurant next door to it and then say ..."while we are here.....". Now I have scuppered that by suggesting a curry in Barnsley so she is now complaining. Shall I put my foot down and risk a 'Deaf and dumb breakfast' i.e. am I a man or a mouse?......................

    ..........sqeak!

    Good man

Always safer to opt for abject cowardice and meek submission in these situations. Well, it works for me anyway! :D

Curry review of Dil Raj as requested...

Not an expert on curry although I do cook a lot. Went to Dil Raj as it was the nearest one of the three suggested. Got there (having booked a table) at 7:15 and we were shown straight to table. Ordered 2 G+Ts "without too much Tonic" whilst looking at the menu. They arrived promptly with just the right amount of tonic ( how many times have I ordered G+T and they drown the gin with tonic).

Not wanting a 'blow-out' we decided to go for the pickle tray and pappadums and just a main course each.

The pickle tray consisted of the usual suspects, A nicely spiced lime pickle, mango chutney, mint and coriander onion and a yoghurt with mint. Unfortunately the latter three were very watery particularly the yoghurt making it practically impossible to get it onto the pappadum without pouring it everywhere. A bit disappointing although the pappadums were crisp and not in the least greasy.

For the mains- I ordered the Handi Lamb Tikka with Peshwari Nan whilst my wife had something I can't remember the name of - chicken with chick peas and spinach with the special rice. In spite of the menu stating the Handi style of cooking made for a dish that was spicier than a normal curry the one I got totally lacked any heat which was a tad disappointing. However, the dish itself was full of flavour, the rich sauce clinging to a generous helping of moist lamb pieces that were not the usual dried up overcooked (numti-reheated?) cubes that you sometimes get elsewhere. The fluffy peshawari nan was the perfect size and I enjoyed every mouthful. My wife also enjoyed her chicken chickpea and spinach dish and the accompanying rice was very tasty. Again it had no heat which was probably good as she claims not to like spicy food (although the lime pickle dish on the revolving tray seemed to be in front of her whenever I went to get some).

Kingfisher draft beer was OK as well.

Verdict: Nothing outstanding and they play the 'famous names who eat here' card. That said the atmosphere was good as there were already plenty of diners with more arriving all the time (nothing worse than being alone with several bored waiters standing around with nothing to do). Food is reasonable but £40 for two including tip (the service was prompt and attentive without being in your face) was a bit pricey to say we had a pickle tray, no starter and just a main with no coffee or dessert. So not exactly a bargain although it did include the pre-dinner drinks and a beer.

I would probably eat there again but first try a couple of the others in the area to see what the competition is like.

    Agree with almost every word

Spot on report. I particularly agree about the Handi stuff which is not at all hot like it says. They had a price increase a few weeks ago which has made it a bit pricey, but as you noticed it still does get very full at week-ends. From your description I reckon your wife had Balti Spi-Cha Chicken Tikka but could be wrong.

I agree it is nothing special but because it is 5 mins walk for me it is, well, handi!!!!!

I'm just off there myself now so I'll see if I get my free pint :D Cheers for report.

I was a fan of Curry Mahal for ages, but it thought it had gone downhill last time I went. So decided to try Dil Raj this summer based on rave reviews.

We were disappointed - service and decor OK, but very bland food. Could have been an off night, but won't be back in a hurry.

Best curry we had this summer visit was a cheap and cheerful place in London - the Mirch Masala near Kensington Olympia tube station. Fantastic food. Take your own beer/wine. Bit of a drive from Dodeth though.

    Nowt beats the Mangla

And as for the Balti Palace in Wombwell, well...............bland, bland, bland and more bland and more than often than not poor in the curry tasting stakes.

Can't believe the good press it gets on here.

Also, there is a difference between hot and spicy.

'Spicy' - using the correct herbs and spices and 'hot' the amount of chillies or heat seasoning used.

It's easy to differentiate, just by taste , surely!

I must admit, all my curries are eaten in Bradford or Sheffield, where I have found the best curry places to be.

Had my first ever curry on London Road in Sheffield at the Curry centre in the 80s and from then onwards I have been hooked.

I buy all my curry spices for meals off the Internet -

    http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZthecurryshop

They do a superb Bombay potato mix - all freshly grounded spices on whatever curries you choose

or shop for them in the Asian Supermarket in Bradford - the only place I know where you can purchase fresh curry leaves and what a difference they make to any home made curry!

Been going for years and the Karachi and Kashmir in Bradford along with Mumtaz are consistently good and the Mangla and Kashmir on Spital Hill are superb.

Roll on Wednesday when I can have another curry!
