    Names in brackets are subs.

The book doesn't list Brendan O'Connell as a squad player for that season, despite having him down (correctly) as a goalscorer.

    It's 87-88 I've got. 60mins of Leeds 0-2 BFC (Foreman 2)

Might stick it on in a bit. Also got full Hull away 1-2 win when we'd just signed Currie. Dobbin/Beresford I think. Savile scored for them.

Yes, more or less. I'm writing an article about the two games for WSB.

Can't remember that game... The one I remember is the 1989/90 season when we beat them 1-0 at home

We were great that day, Darren foreman when he could be bothered was as good as anyone. me and my mate john had got the bus from Barnsley, stopping one that called everywhere, the Barnsley programme the week before had said kids could get in cheap but when we got to bell end road it was full price or nowt! obviously we paid in with what cash we had and then cadged enough to get home on the bus again

Me mum wrote a letter to spinksy complaining so he gave us 2 free tickets for the next home match v Bournemouth, was a night match if I remember and was right chuffed as we had tickets for the west upper with 'complimentary' stamped on them, good times!

The Leeds game brings back very poignant memories for me. One of my best mates got killed in a car crash two weeks before and the funeral was the same day as the game. We were under the cosh for almost the entire game and were one down with 20 mins to go. Then Mad Mel brought on O Connell and Archdeacon. We scored twice in 5 or so mad minutes to pull off a famous and vital win. The atmosphere from the Leeds fans was poisonous that night but boy did we have the last laugh. I'm not religious but somehow it seemed the big fella upstairs was smiling on us that night. RIP Stevie lad. Still sadly missed.

Wasn't that quite attacking for Mel?

    Nuclear Subs

That was the headline in the Chronicle after the Leeds game.

    Leeds game scorers O'Connell 69, Archdeacon 77 (Fairclough 45)
Double substitution on 68 minutes Smith and Futcher for O'Connell and Archdeacon

    Boro scorer Smith 39
Sub on 76 mins O'Connell for McCord

Brilliant, thank you. So all happened within 9 minutes. My memory of it being about 5 minutes wasn't so far off.

I don't suppose you remember who took the long throw for Saville to flick it on and Archdeacon to volley it in do you?

When we played Leeds a couple of years ago I sent a scan of the back page of the Chron "Nuclear Subs" to Matt to put in the programme. Im sure theres a match report attached.

Still my favourite ever match as a barnsley fan. Aged 11, the two games you're talking about we're my first midweek away games I think, they were both Tuesday night matches. You obviously have to include the Taggart post match celebration at Leeds and the john Dennis one at Middlesbrough. I had the Leeds game on a VHS but Christ knows where it is now...
