    I'll second that...PLEASE READ

I used to get heartburn / acid reflux after beer/curry/fatty food etc. you name it and lived on Gaviscon and Setlers. my Dr put me on Omeprazole years ago. Rarely get heartburn/reflux now. Changed my life. Acid reflux if a regular event may damage your oesophagus in the long term and MAY in very rare cases increase the risk of throat cancer so DO see your doctor. I had a Gastroscope at BDGH prior to being put on Omeprazole to check there was nothing dodgy - it can in rare cases (I stress-RARE) be caused by a tumour and in others may be down to a bacteria that resides in the stomach and can be killed by a course of anti-biotics. In any case it is not pleasant to experience it.

In the short term try putting a couple of old books or bits of wood under the bedhead end of your bed which will elevate your head above your body slightly and can reduce the effects.

    Good luck!

White Bread, something else I found to avoid. I would try lifestyle/diet stuff before going on to omeprazole personally. I have had it at various times in my life and, while it does do the job, I have found that lifestyle/diet changes also does the job, and it's not good to be on any medicine long term IMO. It won't work for everyone but worth a try. Chew some chewing gum for a bit after your last meal, that helps me, Airwaves is the best (blackcurrant flavour is lovely). Try not to over-fill yourself. Drink plenty of water. Take it easy on the alcohol. You need to find what you need to avoid.

I've always had concerns about long term side effects but , touch wood, there have never been any and I have been on them for years. On the rare times I have missed a day/tried to cut down it is not long before my body starts to tell me as my heartburn kicks off. I would have to cut out so many things diet wise I am prepared to take the minor risk re long term use, and as I say, so far, so good.

That's fair enough mate, like I said it won't work for everyone, and it is too painful to just live with.
