According to Soccerbase he played 123 games for us. It would be interesting how many MOTM awards he got. It can't be double figures. He never really stood out as the star of a game. For what we paid for him and his wages he was a poor value signing, didn't score enough and we had to waste a season of his contract sending him out on loan because he was bad.
A bit like Williams played for us for a number of years yet never had a chant about him says a lot in terms of recognition etc.
In my opinion, prepared for pelters, but the detriment this lad brings to the team through his appalling attitude and actual skill compared with his perceived skill means it’s a net positive we’re without him next season. I bet his ego has not taken well to not getting a championship team when he clearly thinks he’s a championship player. I’d stand by saying the exact same thing about styles. Glad we’ve got some of these poisonous influences out the dressing room despite some good performances from time to time it doesn’t outweigh the toxicity they bring.
Like many players his performance depended on who we played. if they weren't strong in midfield he looked decent if they were he looked poor. never had him down as a sickbench player cos he played nearly every week. problem was he was ineffectual but playing in a position that affects the game...easily replaced...
Herbie anchored the midfield and we hardly won a game last year without him. Not in Hourihan’s class in my opinion, but a useful addition to any team in this division.
I think the problem with Kane was we were all hoping for another hourihane/Mowatt in midfield and it seemed as though his reputation coming from Donny, apparent ability and opinion of himself backed that theory up. He never hit that level, he certainly has been half decent for us, some, perhaps most of the time? I just think we all thought he would be better. The fact he’s going to have spent his career in league 1 or bouncing around the bottom of the championship says it really. A steady player for us, better than some of the dross we have had in midfield just not great. No hard feelings towards him, don’t think he ever didn’t try.
He seemed to get more involved in goals and assists looking at his more recent stats. But my view of Kane isn't so much about him as a player but another example of our transfer profligacy. There are too many examples where we've acquired a player for a very significant fee on a long contract and they've been loaned out during their time with us before leaving on a free transfer resulting in a big loss. I'd hope this summer we're not looking to spend big fees and we try and get ourselves on an even keel that doesn't need subsidy.
I don’t know Kane personally, never met him, so obviously I haven’t a clue about his personality. Cole plays with a face like a smacked arse, but could be a lovely fella in person. I think there is far more evidence of poisonous personalities on social media than in our dressing room, and by some distance.
Something doesn't add up about this. Super best ex Barnsley Head Coach signs nasty evil waster who used to play for him
10 goals 5 assists last season, from midfield. Good return. Played 42 games, only subbed twice. Awful defence, Cole’s goals fell off a cliff, Kane & Phillips probably scored the lions share of our goals between them.
https://www.htafc.com/news/2024/july/02/herbie-kane-signs-for-town-/ It will have hurt his ego not to have got a Championship move.
Your opinions regarding his performances and skill are fair enough. I don't necessarily agree with them, but you're entitled to your opinion. He never set the world alight with us, but we always looked a better side with him in it, and missed him when he was out. Certainly in the last 2 seasons anyway. I don't understand your comments about attitude and ego though. You've little basis for any of that. He did one strange interview, where he gave closed answers to closed questions; though nobody knows why that was. And whilst he often came across as a little direct in interviews and the behind the scenes stuff that the club did, I don't think there was anything to suggest he had an attitude problem. A lot was made about him not putting out a statement when he left; given we don't know whether he was offered a new deal, and judging by a lot of the stick he's had from fans over the last 12 months or so, you could say he doesn't owe us anything, so why would he. He's not mandated to do so.
Again, where has all this come from about ego? He's signed for Huddersfield very early in pre-season. He could easily have waited for a better offer if he wanted, but he hasn't.
