It reads pushed, Didnt see that happening this week really surprised, I was expecting it to happen if we failed to beat Nothampton on Saturday but not before. Wonder if Disco can finally manage a win when in temporary charge
https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/collins-handshake.329754/#post-3277695 He had to go. The board know if we don't get promoted they will have to pump way more cash in to the club than if we did get promoted So they have rightly decided they don't trust Neil to save them cash. The atmosphere on Saturday was really toxic and we couldn't risk it this weekend. Disco gets another chance but he hasn't pulled up any trees in the past. I wonder if Stead will be kept around. I would still like to wish Neil all the very best in the future. His tactics and lack of progression didn't help things, but if out of contract players decide to down tools six weeks early then that's not his fault. What he had to listen to being said about him at the weekend nobody should have to hear. He hasn't purposely failed. I am pretty sure he would have liked a promotion on his CV and the pay rise that would have come with it and the extra eyes on him from coaching at a higher level. He just wasn't good enough, but we need to hope the board realise their part in this sorry mess and don't repeat the same mistakes this summer. We will all be keep an eye on incoming transfers and outgoings.
I had neither called for his head or backed him. in my opinion the squad is poor, particularly the defence - the players are just not up to it, but also he didn’t improve them either. So there’s blame in 3 camps for me, recruiting, coach and players. To sack him with one game to go just seems odd. I suppose it may be the board thinking it’s a no lose situation for them , if we do win on Saturday they get a bit of credit and if we lose, well it was Collins fault and they have ‘already’ acted. edit - I agree with what some have said in that it might mean the fans are more likely to be behind Disco and the team on Saturday and prevent a toxic atmosphere
As I said at the weekend it's a free hit from a PR perspective. We've been so **** over the past couple of months that they won't get criticised for this, but if he'd stayed and bottled the playoffs then they would have taken some right hammer. It has to be Disco for the remainder of this season, madness to get someone else in given what little time they'd have with the squad.
I'm glad he's not our manager any more, but wish him well. Big move to up sticks with his family from the States to come here. I hope he can assess his methods and have a better crack at it somewhere else.
Just want to place on record a thanks to Neill for his effort and work this season, it might not have gone to plan at times and it's an unfortunate, premature end to the relationship but sometimes it goes like that. I wish you the best for the future.
I said a few weeks ago we'd being going into next season with a new manager. It's no surprise to me, our home form has been atrocious, Collins never really got the best out of the squad available to him, if was obvious that certain players didn't want to play for him.
I find the timing of this decision and announcement very surprising. We were limping miserably to the end of the season, and an unsatisfactory end and managerial departure seemed inevitable, but the board are still opening themselves up to criticism if the performance in the next game is a poor one. Collins was acting as a lightning rod for disillusionment, but with him no longer there it will be the board that the annoyed will next turn on.
No brainer - the atmosphere would have gone toxic pretty quickly come Saturday if we got off to a poor or slow start. Then the players would have got their heads down with no coming back from it.
Got to say I'm surprised begs the question why now the rot set in a few weeks ago. Seems a bit knee jerk to me was told weeks ago senior pros weren't happy looks like they have got their way. Don't think Davaney even in the short term is any upgrade but time will tell.
Very surprised, didnt think they had it in them. Now, if we want a great atmosphere on Sat, stick Bobby in the dugout too.
I think Collins will get it right at another club and do well. So thank him for his efforts. As others say - big task to up sticks from USA and come back over. Presume Stead is staying for now too? Warnock for the playoffs?
Must admit that I'm surprised by the timing. I figured they'd let him see out the season. Feels like a bit of a panic move to act now, but I'll trust the club's judgement that Saturday's game is better faced without him than with him. Let's hope Devaney can get them over the line now. No word on whether Stead has departed with him, so I assume he's still employed for now. I'm assuming it's a reaction to the on-field product, rather than the impending ST deadline, but I wonder if that was also a factor. It's a bold move, for sure, so I'll give the club credit for that.
