Re: I was in the "pro" Sheron camp I'm with you on that. I rated him as a footballer. Unfortunately, at that time when we were struglging a tireless worker would probably have suited us better. He never managed to regain the form he'd shown at Stoke though. Mainly with his finishing, I lost count of times when he'd created something out of nothing for himself only to blaze it over the bar. Probably a psychological thing.
he used to put the ball where his team mate SHOULD BE, i think thats what he means and to be honest i agree.
Think he epitomised that time in our history Not his fault what he got paid or what we paid for him, but he could've broke sweat a couple of times. Remember him notching for Stoke v us a few years earlier, he looked fcking awesome - strong, quick, fantastic finisher. Signed for us and lost his mojo.
I always thought he was a lazy sod But his finishing was appalling too. He once missed from six inches.
Re: I always thought he was a lazy sod Yet you say Haynes is a decent laiker?? Haynes missed from 2 inch against Donny.. and Sheron scored many goals in comparison to most of our strikers since. He, Dyer, Hristov and Shipperley in 99-00 were the best strikeforce Ive seen at Oakwell, with Merlin behind working the magic. All offered sumat different, and all were highly paid. But Sheron gets grief. Id pick him over Haynes any day of the week.. all the above is of course IMO
That's not the whole story Mike Sheron cost us £1.5 million. He was paid an awful lot of money. I know it wasn't his fault that we paid so much for him and he didn't hold a knife to our chairman's throat when negotiating his contract, but you can't take how much money he cost the club out of the equation when assessing his ability. We paid just a couple of hundred grand for Danny Haynes and even though he was signed over 10 years later than Sheron, he won't be on anywhere near as much. I'm not sure it's fair to compare our joint record signing and one of the highest earners the club has ever had with a modestly priced championship player. If we're going to then I reckon Haynes is a decent laiker for what we paid for him, while Sheron didn't give us nearly enough of a return for our outlay. And for my money, if Haynes and Hill got on, I reckon Haynes would be a decent player in this team. I think he's got the right attributes. I don't think Sheron had. Being the manager he is and how he demands hard work, I can't imagine that Hill would have put up with Sheron's lackadaisical attitude for two minutes. He hasn't put up with Haynes for too long either like, but I reckon Haynes puts in three times the effort.
Fair play Jay I rarely - if ever - disagree with you, and so its quite refreshing to argue so to speak, as whether I concur or not, you make a good fist of your point. And tbh, I have said all along that I would have kept Danny Haynes. But Im loathe to argue with Keith. His record as far as recruitment and such goes, is near exemplary, and with a 4th tier budget. I agree its hard to compare past and present players, but its always going to happen. I here people saying Butterfield wouldnt be a miss, that he isnt as good as Howard, Hignett or Hammill. But as you point out, the cash paid for those, in wages and transfer fees, has to be taken into account. And therefore, surely, at 21, and an academy product, paid peanuts, he must be better than at least one if not two of those 'star' names from BFC's past..? And, unless Daggers is the answer, we will soon see how little we miss our under-appreciated captain. Danny Haynes IMO is a mystery. He has been bombed out of three 2nd tier clubs now, and we as fans are pretty much quoting verbatim the same stuff I read the Ipswich and Bristol fans said. I am of the belief, that if you want to be a winner, want to succeed, that Hillcroft will help you achieve that. Take Ricardo Vaz Te for an example of that, and, even O'Brien and Butterfield. I believe Keith hasnt seen that desire in Haynes, or willingness to be a part of Team Barnsley.
Re: Fair play Jay I haven't got a problem with Keith Hill doing it his way, signing who he wants to sign and selling who he wants to sell. I'm not raising objections to his transfer policy. I'm just saying that I think Haynes is a decent enough player. Best of luck in finding a new job by the way.
