Anyone have recollections of the school appearing on BBC`s Top of the Form, I seem to recall a boy called Wake who knew his classical music and a blond haired kid same age as me who were on the team, filmed in the hall, lots were drawn to see who got to be in the audience during filming, I left around 1967, I also remember a maths teacher called Williams or Williamson had terrible dental hygiene used to teach in the old prefab classroom.
I went Broadway as well and to quote Monty Python "we looked down on them" at Holgate. Elevation like size is everything.
Great sports fields those. We all refused to play rugby in my year. Football or cross country were my sports.
Apparently when playing soccer we once sent a sniper up the fire station tower to take out the goalie. Sniper said the goalie never moved so he thought he was a cardboard cut out.
I remember it well. I also left in 1967. The school appeared a number of times, in fact, and not only appeared, but won the final too. I also remember Wake. I think his first name was Colin. He was in the year below me, i believe. There was also a boy called Mitchell, who was in the year above. The youngest member of the team may have been called Armitage, but I am not entirely certain about that. The oldest may have been a lad called Wood. Not sure about that, either. We were asked by our form teacher if we wanted to attend, and I recall that I did want to, but thought it seemed rather uncool to show any enthusiasm, so didn't.
We used to go on a coach to Holgate get changed then walk back up to Siberia and we were nearer to Broadway Tech than Holgate
Can we broaden this ----- Anyone else go to Afon Taf High School, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan ----- thought not!
Ah, thanks. I didn't know him at all, as he was in the 1st form, I believe, and I was in the 4th, apart from seeing his performances on Top of the Form, so I am quite proud of myself for remembering even his surname. It is reassuring to have one's memories from so long ago corroborated by others. It helps me to believe that I am not going barmy.
Quite right Gregory Armitage was the youngest person on Holgate's winning team. Paddy Feeney was our question master but I can't remember the question master for Aberdeen GS who Holgate beat. Actually Aberdeen won the rehearsal round but Holgate won the televised live event. If I recall correctly the team also set a record winning score for "T.V. Top of the Form (there was a longer-running radio version. I was at the televised final (in the hall). I was only at BGS for one year, leaving in 1964 to go to De la Salle in Sheffield (mum was religious). Was in Keresforth house, seem to remember "Spot" Avery was house master, and 1 Lancaster, Mr Perkin was form teacher "Sag" Roche was Headmaster......
