Lol can't remember anyone called Upper_East either. I was in 1 Locke 2B, 3B, 4B and 5B. Norman Goddard was form teacher in 2B and was brilliant

 

There was a lad on the team called Michael Mitchell (his middle name was Egley) and his parents used to own/run the angling shop, Bielby's, on Wellington Street. We were both in the same year and both went with three others ( Alan Walker, a crackpot called
? Youell and A. Another) from Agnes Road Juniors.

Yes I remember it well. I was a reserve member for the team waiting for one of the chosen to die. Colin Wake was a big lump of a lad and a namesake but no relation. Armitage was the name of the blond haired kid. I left in 67 but might have been two years ahead if you if you left after 5th form

 

The other question master was Geoffrey Wheeler who did the first two rounds. I was a reserve for the team and Norman Goddard was the teacher who did the selection process. As a reserve I got a front row seat at the events which were broadcast live

 

Alan Melling, sadly passed away on Thursday 9th November 2023 aged 67 years.
A loving Dad & Grandad, a dedicated teacher and a great sportsman, Alan will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
The funeral service will take place on Friday 15th December 2023 at 2.00 pm at South Leicestershire Memorial Park and Crematorium, Foston Rd, Countesthorpe, Leicester, LE8 5QP.

V v good footballer. Signed for Coventry (1st Division at that time) on leaving school and then broke his leg in his early days there.
Coulda been a contender.
RIP Al. Old friend not forgotten.

 

Left BGS in 1964. BGS won "TV Top of the Form" in 1963/4, as someone said earlier, Wake was a star in the final of "TV Top of the Form" in classical music, the blond-haired lad was Gregory Armitage, who won the "Pausey Prize" the same year. BGS beat Aberdeen Grammar School in the final (we lost the rehearsal) by a record score. Paddy Feeney was the question master for us: while waiting for the start he led the audience in a rendition of "On Barnsley Main muck stack" (to the tune of "On Ilkley Moor b'art hat".

Al was a superb footballer as you know very well, it was an honour to have played with him for 5 years. He would surely have made it had he not broken his leg at Coventry. Here's a couple of photos, RIP Al Melling.

Thanks for posting the photos, Stahlrost. I was in the year below you, and remember him well. Even picked him up from his house to play football once - think it was for Barnsley Boys' Club.
