Maybe not, but I’m just giving my own opinion of what I know. I’m not on a one man crusade to prove anyone wrong. The same chat you’d have down the pub. You’re also completely dismissing how ‘loud’ Peterborough are and how Barry Fry is regularly caught stretching the truth in quotes. He wrongly said we were interested in a player the other day. You didn’t answer my question either. Keen to know what you think as you’ve got Peterborough on such a pedestal at the moment.
Hope you managed to keep a straight face when you typed that last sentence. Now let’s go back to outside the young defender and then having no one else of value.
i don’t especially rate Peterborough I think we should be able to compete at the same level as them. Not have to sell our entire team when we get relegated. You have different expectations and spin it as great news for whatever reason. They are exactly the same position as us with a 6-8 million loss of income. I bet you that they manage to bridge that gap without losing pretty much their entire first team. If we were better at selling players we would be able to do so too.
You didn’t answer my question though mate. What do you think the reaction would have been to us selling Morris in January? And for all the money their strikers have brought in, we got more up front for Alfie Mawson than they did for Ivan Toney and nearly as much as Assombolonga. What they do really well is scout and sign strikers who score goals for fun in League One, whereas our carousel recently has been defenders. Goal scorers will always allow you to go big with transfer fees but we’ve generally got recruitment wrong there or not been able to sell at the right time (or chosen not to because of sell on fees). We’re not that dissimilar when you add in £4m for Roberts, £2.7m for Moore, and £2.5m for Lindsay. As we saw with the Morris sale, we rejected bids ourselves.
Straight face when you typed this one? One of the reasons pointed out already is their ability to have debts written off or underwritten by the owner. But we’re blissfully ignoring that I assume? Don’t get the ‘better at selling players’ comment. Like it’s the club’s fault nobody has actually made a bid for Styles since January.
No, we wouldn't want that because if we go £60 million in debt and fiddle FFP we'll be out of the league as fast as the EFL can say Macclesfield.
Not picking on your post specifically, but your comments made me think about this... For most of last season - and in most seasons where we're **** - you see many folk saying they'd rather dump the established players and "play the kids" on the basis that they'll put more effort in, and we'd all be much happier watching a side that puts the effort in even if they have limited ability than watch a side go through the motions. That's exactly what we're going to see this season. I don't see much to suggest that we'll be particularly successful, but if the coach is halfway competent and there's some promise in the players we bring through, then I feel we ought to be OK with that. If we plug the financial black hole at the same time, even better. The players that have gone didn't want to be here. Helik and Styles are almost certainly in the same boat (and I can't blame them at all), maybe Collins too. If they don't want to be here, shift them on and get some players that do.
Not that I’m aware of. Just suggesting there’d have been uproar if he left. Quite rightly. Me included.
Are we not allowed to speak about hypothetical situations to compare against others? Isn’t that something we do almost all the time as football fans? Jesus Christ Jimmy. You’re on one this evening/this Summer.
looking at Price of football can’t see much evidence of massive cash injections. They lost 3 million in first pandemic season but returned to profit following that. They have debts in the form of interest free loans but also crucially cash surplus generated through sales. Happy to be wrong but I did have a reasonably thorough look.
the reality is if we had been offered 2.5 million for Morris he would have been sold. My scenario is as imaginary as yours but much more likely to be true.
I’m not saying we wouldn’t have sold him. I agree. Confused on your angle here. I’m just asking how we would have reacted as supporters. Not well I imagine.
But that's what the man said. He doesn't want players here who don't want to be here. He didn't add "but only if they're crap"
