What I like in all this is that the club has developed a very clear ethos in terms of player recruitment and replacement. As fans, we can buy into it, because a) it is clearly stated and transparent and b) it has brought us success. I have every confidence that the board and coaching/recruitment staff would be able to bring in players on this conveyor belt approach who have similar development potential as the ones who have brought us success thus far. The model has been similarly made successful by the likes of Burnley and, you could argue, by Bournemouth and Southampton in the Premiership. We need new blood from time to time to bring along the next phase in the cycle of development, both of players and of the club. Keep 'em coming. Keep 'em going. We could spend a fortune on 'super-stars' who don't perform, or we could spend wisely on players who have the potential and the desire and who have been well scouted. I know which model I would go for. It's a win-win. Hope we keep on winning, though.
Those two replace Fletcher and Brownhill. I'd sell them both this summer if a good enough bid came in. January they will be worth peanuts and losing both next summer for nothing would be suicidal. The money they would bring in would keep funds available for our business model and we can go after the next name on the spreadsheet. Bring in some new guys who see their long term future with us and want to sign up to play for us. Not a knock on either player as they are entitled to keep their options open if they think they can do better elsewhere. If Conor thinks a bigger club will offer him captaincy good luck to him. Just don't want another Hammill situation holding on and wondering, but this time with two not one key player.
We wouldn't get £6m for any player on a 10 year contract, we are Barnsley and clubs just do not pay what our players are worth when it's much easier just to unsettle them and get them on the cheap.
It's why u said financially successful. Though this is Peterbrough's most successful sustained period in their history so it's perhaps unfair to say it hasn't succeed on the pitch as well.
But we didn't get money for Fletcher or brownhill so clearly there is money to bring in the next Winnall or Hourihane; my point being that we don't have to sell them to have money to buy quality players That's your view mate but personally I'd rather keep them for this season as staying up would be far more beneficial financially
Although recently we do seem to have become less of a soft touch: turning down bids in the past for Roberts, Winnall (albeit derisory); and Mawson. Hopefully we will lose this reputation!
What I don,t understand is why don,t they sign another contract then they will be on more money put a clause in saying they can go if a certain figure is offered then everybody,s happy.
All this was in response to that very question. I found their Patrick's explanation very reasonable and realistic...
That's exactly the same thing I was thinking last night. There's no downsides to it and we both win. Could even have a relegation release clause too if wanted/needed.
Agreed. Hope I'm wrong here but I think they will not be in the starting line up by the end of the season Reasonable 1st division players - but likely to find it too much in the Chapionship
