Hear, hear (usually with a comma and set apart as a self-contained sentence) is the conventional spelling of the colloquial exclamation used to express approval for a speaker or sentiment. It’s essentially short for hear him, hear him or hear this, hear this, where these phrases are a sort of cheer. Here, here is widely regarded as a misspelling, although it is a common one, and there are ways to logically justify its use. But for what it’s worth, hear, hear is the original form (the Oxford English Dictionary cites examples going back to the 17th century) and is the one listed in dictionaries. English reference books mention here, here only to note that it’s wrong.
I was working until 2pm today, Mario so I've no comment on his performance this time. But I think I'm being myself (fair and honest) in responding to a thread calling him 'toss' etc at half time in a game we were drawing 0-0 with a side flying in the division above. And my response was to give my opinion on him, which is that he's been fantastic for us but has good and bad games. I saw him have a stinker at Bumhole Lane. Similarl at Chesterfield. I've never thought he was the finished article, but I just don't feel the need to come on here and slate him or others every time they have a bad game. I'm as close as I've ever been to taking a long break from this forum and twitter. I've never felt as conflicted with others on here as I do at present. Maybe they're a vocal minority, but seriously, I read more posts on here right now that I don't just disagree with, but posts I can't get my head around. The amount of posters sharing my own view has declined rapidly. But then, I've noticed of late that the majority of these lads/lasses aren't posting so much anymore. I think I'm going to take a bit of a backseat on here for a bit. I'd love to take a break, but I do love the place in general so I know I'll not manage to. But aye, going to lessen my input/appearances. New year, new Whitey.
It's about context, mate. I didn't say he was one of our greatest ever players, which is what those are you've listed. I said I think he's a fantastic player. He has been for us so far. To get 11 goals and assists in a struggling side is good going. But you make fair points on his involvement in games. He isn't the sort from what I've seen to force himself into it, to grab a game by the balls. But I think for a 23 year old lad or whatever he is, making the step up, in a side in transition, forever changing teammates etc, he's having a great first season with us and I'm absolutely thrilled he plays for us. I can only hope he gets better and adds more strings to his bow as time goes by. Happy New Year to you and yours too.
Would be a sad loss to lose your input on this board Whitey But maybe the reason people don't share your views is because the current product is Dire and has been apart from the occasional performances. Your view of Hourihane is a typical example. He has shown promise but is absolute gash at times. Only commenting on what I have seen when I've attended, can't speak for today or other games.
give over! you can't live without this place i called his first half performance to$$, cos IMO i thought it was. and i still think it was. as for the season so far, based on what i've personally seen - 6/10. if he has a blinder against yeovil, i'll give him top marks for it..
Given he's scored more goals than all our strikers added together and set up more than the rest of the team put together can you just say what exactly you want him to do? If you got your wish and he was way to be replaced who some mythical player that can score assist and be tackling all over the pitch and who would be happy coming to Barnsley. Without him we would be rock bottom of the league it really is as straightforward as that. He has bad games it's his first season at this level. Be careful what you wish for given the 2 goals from the rest of our midfield this season.
I think the posters who share my views are also sharing my apathy with the forum. We disagree on Hourihane. Not the end of the world. I'm going nowhere, I'm just going to take a step back and be less argumentative/aggressive in tone.
Poor today there's no doubt about that but it's a bit of an over the top reaction from the thread starter in my opinion. Berry was also poor on the ball but in his case his off the ball work saves him from criticism for me. I'm more concerned about the fitness levels of Hemmings, Lita & Jennings. Appalling. I thought Lita was going to have a decent game after he won plenty of headers in the first half hour but he seemed knackered after that. I keep having to remind myself he's only 29 & not 37 because he plays like he's 37
i think you maybe misunderstood my point. i didn't say i wanted him to leave. and i could say what i wanted him to do. but i suspect you'd still disagree with me anyway. so not sure there's much point. just difference of opinion innit.
Hourihane was terrible today. So bad it was close as to whether berry was worse. But berry being berry, he was worse, just. Awful. Hourihane can have good games in terms of goals and/or assists but even in those games he drifts in and out of the game and can be ineffective. But he has end product when in form. He will improve I think and will go on to be a good player I hope. He isn't a good player yet though imo. But if berry keeps getting picked then whoever is at the side of him will look like fabregas and Xavi rolled into one anyway. I have seen nothing in him to suggest any kind of ability
Moments of pure magic but whos overall game is severely lacking due in part to a lack of effort (although this may be down to him simply not realising that he should be doing certain things). Put it this way, he scores more goals but isnt a patch on butterfield in the same position
Not even close in terms of all round ability. But still a quality operator for us so far at this level and with time to improve on that all round game.
Butterfield had better vision and was better at beating a man. Hourihane is (was atm) better with the dead ball and at shooting.
