My problem is not with Muller anyway

its the way people are always giving Colgan grief.

Did you watch Clive Baker at Oakwell?

I did watch Baker, more than most

rarely missed a game in the mid eightiesto early nineties

best shot stopper we have ever had. Was excellent when forwards had broken past defence and running at him. Never slow off his line in such situations. On the whole had a much better defence in front of him ( taggart, Tyler, Beresford, flemming, futcher, Gray etc ) which protected him from corners but what he lacked in height he more than made up form in agility and positional awareness and he seldom dropped clangers. Colgan is a fantastic shot stopper on his day but has failings in other areas and not I feel in the same league as Baker.

RE: I did watch Baker

Thats my point, Baker had a much better defence in front of him. He was garbage on crosses too. But still the best keeper we have had in my lifetime.
The fullbacks tackled and prevented the wingers getting crosses in, they knew Bakers weakness and worked to prevent it from being exposed. The fullbacks Colgan has had in front of him have been in the main *****.
The best right back for me had been Tonge, but he was not good enough.

I agree

The entire defence has been weak but the full backs have been oour achilles heel - none have been good enough with the possible exception perhaps of Hassle who with the correct central defensive pairing at the side of him may improve? but its the pace these players have lacked IMHO.

Our problems at the back are a combination of lack of pace, experience amongst other things including the goalkeeping.

Find the right full backs and perhaps Reid may flourish with another quality centreback, give the defence a keeper who can dominate the area and our handling of any aerial threat will improve, give colgan full backs and a good central pairing and that may be the solution.

All combinations of these factors may have to be tried (hopefully pre-season) and tested until we identify which defenders / keeper works best.

Midfield also has its role to play - wingers that support full backs, centre midfield that not only create chances but work to defend at need.

One things for sure is that without another decent keeper (as cover at the very least) and at least 1 quality centreback then we are doomed to struggle.

I think we need to plan without Reid. I dont think he is up to it.
2CH at least, but we need pace and composure there. an old head is good but a good quick player will always beat you
