Don Mellor was a legend - used to turn up in his posh Jaguar car and then ref for a 7/6d fee.
He once got into hot water with the Fa. The teams turned up about 20 minutes late for a game, so he blew for full time 20 minutes early at the normal finishing time. Match had to be replayed!!! Again, great memories!!!!

I only played Sunday Morning football in my (not so) illustrious career.

Anyone who did ANY refereeing deserves a medal as big as a dustbin lid.

I always made a point of shaking the ref's hand and thanking him each and every match - it's just a pity that modern day footballers realise that without ref's there is no football - it really is as simple as that.

Yep that's the Don Mellor I remember, he once told one of our lads not to bother getting changed cos he'd only end up sending him off for swearing, :)

Legend is not a word I'd use. Granted he was a character and well respected in many circles I'm sure. Any referree that left a bad feeling for not undertaking their duties correctly (Not talking about having a perceived poor game here) was letting their colleagues down.

Hi Don nothing wrong with going to Oakwell I was on the Premier league the year we were playing in it and god forbid anyone who criticised our result in the changing room after the match even if we got hammered including Graham Poll!
