i thought about 750k mate - we bought some new floodlights with the money i think. what a great bit of business....
Dave Geddis scored almost a goal every 2..24 in 45 apps Apparantly clarke "you are joining Birmingham" Geddis " I dont went to go anywhere" clarke"you'll not play again for Barnsley"
RE: Hirst was a massive give away
He had 9 goals in 28 games which was a good tally for an 18 year old.
But he was still very young and there was no way of knowing that he would establish himself in the top flight. If he had been injured early in his Wednesday career he could have been their Gridlet.
You have to remember that transfer fees then were not as inflated like they are now.

No, totally disagree Howard is a proven performer at Championship level, goalscoring midfielder, 25 years old in the prime of his life. Muller was a bit unknown, getting on a bit, plying his trade in a weakish Scandanavian league. Yes, very good signing but much less obviously a top player than Howard.
at the time it was peanuts He was as close to the wayne rooney of the time as you could ever see. Terrified defenses. Biggest **** up the BFC directors made in the eighties and they made more than a couple.
Johnny, did you see David Hirst play? It was obvious he was a massive talent from the the first game I saw him. He excited me as a fan as no player at Oakwell has ever done. Absolutely breathtaking; fast, direct, physical, and a great finisher. If you can't see that as a coach, you need to pack it in. Wednesday fans of my generation still talk about him as their best player ever, and that includes Di Canio, Carbone etc etc.
I agree he had the pace and could finish Looked a little raw but defo had the talent - shame we had to get rid of him - weren't we a bit of financial trouble at that time?
Spot on Man Utd wanted to sign him or Shearer. Without his injuries and boozing he would have been Shearers England strike partner. Notwithstanding, £250k was a joke.
RE: Johnny, did you see David Hirst play? Of course I saw him play. Been going to the Oakwell over 50 years since I was a Bairn.
There's been plenty of players who have made an immediate impact on the Game and following a big transfer have gone down like a lead ballon. Steve Kindon, and Kevin ? can't remember his second name but signed for Man City for a massive fee, are examples.
I still think it was a lot of money for a kid.

You must have been watching a different player to me if his obvious class and potential didn't strike you in the eye. i guess that's why you never made it as a coach at FL level. Have you thought about a job at the Barnsley Academy?
Just shows how bad a deal the £600k for Howard is if we are comparing it to Hirsty No, we haven't forgotten Hirsty going to Wendy and we will not forget Howard going to the Blunts Its a sad sad day for Barnsley Football Club And one that will be rememberd for a very long time
RE: Just shows how bad a deal the £600k for Howard is if we are comparing it to Hirsty Onwards and upwards! Howard can be replaced, there are 11 men on the field and as a team they can replace him easily. IMO Howard was a selfish player who only played for his own personal glorification. After a purple patch in a period between October and February last season, Howard proved nothing to me that he his indispensible to the team. We can replace him, you only have to look at the two away games we played whilst Howard was injured. Prior to the Watford game, the doom mongers were out in force and Leon proved to be far more of a creative influence than Howard. Yes he is lightweight, can't tackle, can't head but Howard wasn't perfect and with a combination in midfield with de Silva he can be far more effective than Brian was. (raiseaglass)
RE: You must have been watching a different player to me Cut the jibe mate.
I never said I didn't recognize his potential. Mearly stating a fact that his career wasn't guranteed to be a success and that £250000 was alot of money then for an 18 year old.
And as I said in an earlier post don't believe every thing you hear quoted about transfer fees.
