+1 for Steve Creek. Never had him as a teacher but for Rugby he was ace. Bloody fast too for a big bloke. Took us all to Blackpool for a Rugby weekend, great stuff. And we won the Schools Cup, not bad for the only school in Barnsley that played Rugby League against teams from areas like Wakefield, Featherstone and Castleford where it's in-bred (and so are the kids).
also the scene in Kes where the young lad goes to the heads office for the register and is loaded up with all the bad lads fags and ends up getting the cane too,was based on a true event too. Boggy Marsh sent a kid to Mr Roby to show him his good work and thus get a credit for it. He went into the office where my Mum was typing and told her that Mr Marsh had sent him and why. My Mother went into Mr Roby's office and told him a pupil was sent by Mr Marsh ...she did not tell why so as not to steal the honour from the kid... he was sent in where Mr Roby promptly gave him six of the best with his cane...My Mother rushed in and hurridley told him the real reason ... Mr Roby did not apologise ...just said " ah well it will do him no harm....character building you see" and thats totally correct. Barry Hines used a lot of his Kirk Balk experiences in a number of his books. That's why I love them all.
