RE: neither...

    Got ya boss!

    You've 2 options:

    1) Joke Shop and a colour photocopier (library or work)
    2) Get Windy's or McDog's ASBOs and ditto as above

    Hope that helps!

As a last resort I have no problem with handing out ASBO's for certain types of more serious offences. Problem is a good number of these ASBO's are completely out of kilter for the punishment and in some cases this ends up putting young adults in jail for trivial offences if they break the ASBO. Do we really want more teeneagers going into jail as petty offenders and coming out hardened criminals?

    Some examples of ridiculous ASBO's,

-In 2003 a 78 year old man was given an ASBO and told by a court "not to make sarcastic remarks".

-A Scottish woman was threatened with jail if she was seen at her window in her underwear, after neighbours complained she was walking round her house half naked.

-A severely depressed and suicidal woman was told by a court she would be jailed if she we near "any railway track, river, canal, lake anywhere in England and Wales." All because she was suicidal and had failed in 3 previous attempts on her own life. The judge told her, "You are not to dip one toe, not one finger in a river or canal." So even if she wanted to enjoy a walk by the lake, and wasn't feeling suicidal, she couldnt. It might be argued that this was more likely to make here feel more suicidal, not less.

ASBO's might be a short term fix, but they don't address the underlying reasons as to why people act this way. Where's the money to get kids off the streets and into community centre's where they can get involved in some useful projects rather than hanging around on street corners?

Here in Leeds where I live there is an old run down building that's meant to have been converted into a community centre. It's been shut down for at least 4 years, possibly longer. The local park is a disgrace and falling to pieces, but the council can afford to sandblast dozens of buildings in the city centre, cobble stone the whole of Briggate (daren't imagine the cost) and is no doubt raking in tonnes of money with all the new developments going up - but how many youth and community centres have they built. A big fat zero.

Of course none of this is an excuse for bad behaviour, but when some folk have been brought up not to know any different and have no outlet for their anger or frustration then some of them are obund to end up in trouble trouble. Interestingly 'social contracts' signed by those committing offences have proven to be very successful in getting people to behave.

To be fair Acky, as a kid, I'd rather of pissed about in an old run down building then a community centre doing finger paintings.

    Unfortunately

... that has a lot to do with the over exposure we now give on a media basis to this sort of thing.

If it just existed, without all the hype and without the cameras and reporters hiding behind every hedge willing to give publicity and strength to offenders, it might have more chance of success.

hah, well each to their own. Not far from Ackworth in Featherstone they opened up a local centre that had been closed down for about 8 years. Within weeks most of the kids weren't hanging around on street corners or getting into trouble, they were in there playing pool etc.

I dunno, I just think we have to stop stigmatising folk and try and be positive instead of backing laws that aren't going to sort out societies ills otherwise we'll have the same problems, only worse, in 20 years time. Just my view mind ;)

I think the difference is that the younger teenagers aren't as bothered about hiding their mischief as they used to be. Most people go off the rails in some way or another when they're younger. The difference is where I'd possibly throw a few stones and a greenhouse and scarper in the late 70's, the tearaways today would rather beat someone up and film it on their mobiles.

As long as I can remember everyone used the excuse "well there's nothing else to do" when they got caught.
