Just because Edwards' sentence is a light one (and in my opinion, lenient), doesn't justify racist scumbags also be given the same. Edwards' is wrong, the racists isn't.

When the riots first happened I was fully in favour of locking everyone up before I realised we had an issue with overcrowded prisons.

But now I’m just appalled at the state of sentencing in this country.

A first time offender who was a middle aged woman & a bit of a keyboard warrior, who posted ‘blow the mosque up’ got a 14 months prison sentence.

Huw Edwards pays to receive full on child pornography & then asks for more & gets a suspended sentence.

I can’t see any justification for that.

Who’s more likely to re-offend? I’d argue that if the cops turned up at a keyboard warriors address who’s never been in trouble before then I’d expect she would **** herself so much that she would never post anything controversial again if she lives to be a 1000 years old.

At the same time if you’re sexually attracted to minors then is that ever going to change?

I don’t know about others on here but I don’t have significantly different attractions to what I had a decade ago.

As for losing the chance of a possible knighthood & a high salaried job, if (presumably) any of us were caught watching child porn then we would deservedly be punished & unlike an extremely wealthy Huw Edwards we wouldn’t be able to move abroad or buy a house with no neighbours. Your life would be much tougher surrounded by people knowing you’re a nonce or even abusing you in the street. He’s an extremely lucky man.

I find it really disappointing that it’s another high profile tv presenter. An intelligent, clean cut public face delivering serious news to millions of us on a daily basis.

Having said that, the more famous and trusted you are, the more the disclosure is going to hurt you. He might be wealthy and still have his freedom, but he’s seriously ‘damaged goods’ in everyone’s eyes, from viewers to friends and his own family.

    His sentence is now mental.

Someone's fame, standing or job shouldn't be allowed to be factored into sentencing for me. It's what allowed Chris corke to become a serial offender

I was thinking the same reading this, seriously scary reading the bloke had pictures with kids as young as 7. Unbelievable he won't serve a day of prison.

Good post. There's no defending how completely moronic some people have behaved with how they've used social media to post absurd things in relation to the riots / events in Southport. We now see these people recieving significant jail terms for such offences, however, the nonce Huw Edwards avoids jail because apparently he'd be "vulnerable" inside and he's a first time offender. It's ******* disgusting. what if someone who made a social media post is a first time offender? What if they'd be vulnerable inside?

Yeah? I'd say there are others that are far more stupid, dangerous even. Carry on.

He should have been spending some time in jail. There's got to be an element of a punishment being seen to be done for such a crime.

I think you’ve misunderstood my post. I don’t think I said anything about his standing in relation to his punishment.

I said ‘his sentence is mental’ as in it’s something he’s got to live with for the rest of his life, and it’s already been reported he has poor mental health.

I wasn't suggesting that you thought it but courts do seem to use it as an excuse for lenient sentences so I was just referencing it

Explanation of sentence here and why it’s in line with current sentencing guidelines

It *had* to be absolutely in line with the guidelines. Too lenient - or too harsh - and there would have been appeals quicker than you can say "Lionel Hutz Attorney at Law". A high profile offender with a court case in the public eye would have had more scrutiny than most of the others this year.

For comparison, Paul Gadd was sentenced to 4 months in prison and placed on the sex offenders register for having over 4,000 images in his first conviction. The laws have changed since, but Edward's sent is roughly in line with that one.

Puts me in mind of this Madness song

Once went out with a London girl
    Dirty weekend in a hotel
Broke it off when she got shirty
She was twelve and he was thirty

Right after that, he was dead sore
He wouldn't go out with girls no more
From that day since, he never has
He wants to do something dirty
