If it has a bias it's more Lib Dem and the opinion bits are clearly identified as such. News is reported as news and nothing else. For balance, they also have occasional contributions from the Tories. It's a far more impartial media outlet than say the Mail which never reports news impartially and wages a constant war against anyone not from the most reactionary right wing of opinion. I know what I'd rather read.
[QUOTEI like Starmer...seems the most honest MP of the lot, but have no idea what he really stands for. Going forward I'll see how the country recovers..and it will . Hard times I'm afraid
Surely honesty is worth voting for?
Each to their own and all that, but after 12 years of Conservative Governments essentially breaking the country, I find it staggering that people can still think "thank god Labour weren't in charge". I just wish Milliband had eaten that bacon sandwich properly.
Johnson went because he lost the support of his MPs. After lying repeatedly, forcing them to lie repeatedly and cover up corruption (Paterson, VIP Lane, Mone, Furlough funds), but the final straw was the report that Johnson was aware that Pincher had previous complaints of sexual assault and was promoted anyway and Johnson tried to cover it up. Yet again. Only one person responsible for the downfall of Johnson - and he sees him every time he looks in the mirror. TBF though, he also brought down Cameron and May and is likely to be the end of Truss before too long.
Surely honesty is worth voting for?
Surely honesty is worth voting for?
It certainly is...but it needs a bit of substance behind it as well.
Why is it a cop out . It's true .we had one representing this town did we not . There plenty of dodgy mp's in the Labour Party . I support nether party
Some of them are. Barnsley was a very insular community with strong union/Labour links and a healthy dislike for "outsiders" - As I found out when I moved here in 1980. Lots of casual racism, homophobia and sexism in the playground and on the terraces around that time. I'd lived here for 7 years before I met a single peer that wasn't white and most could trace their family back generations in the same village. Its got a lot better since then, but many of those attitudes are not the same as what Labour values are commonly perceived to be.
In the interest of balance and fairness, whilst I am very left sided, I have to point out that The Guardian is a left wing paper and is not as unbiased as you make out
Because you're using that as an excuse to avoid having to criticise her. And nothing will change through apathy.
The town itself was built on coal . Immigration in barnsley did not happen purely because people coming in to the country did not want to work underground , You can't blame barnsley folk for that. Looking at cities like Bradford , Wakefield and Rotherham and Sheffield and the issues around immigration, I'm glad that we were late to the immigration party .From the people I know personally and often work for, immigration in town is far more inter grated and accepted more than the places I have just mentioned. I found places like Bradford and Rotherham more unwelcoming to immigration
It always amazes me how much of a correlation there is between idiotic views and being unable to work the quote function. Obviously that doesn't apply to anyone in this thread
Migration and immigration is what built the town in its current form . In parts of Carlton it was welsh speaking in the early 1800s. And migration had happened regularly ftom being a small Market Town to the sprawling metropolis it is now . Many Eastern Europeans migrated here after the SWW from about 1946 to The early sixties and beyond on a smaller scale although many places in Britain provided a workforce in SYorks with pit closures etc .
the Guardian actively rallied against Corbyn and were one of the front runners for stirring the anti-semitism stories. Absolutely the opposite of being ‘Labour since 2015’. The Guardian certainly has a broadly left lean, but oddly, so has the country. Indeed it might make sense to suggest that the Guardian follows the public; where the Mail, Telegraph, Sun and Express constantly aim to push the electorate to the right. And back to your early point; it ought to be obvious that a single journalist can’t approach a subject purely subjectively, it’s the reason there’s 12 members of a jury, and why academic papers are peer reviewed. No one is stupid enough to expect journalists to be impartial are they?
The vast majority of ‘Barnsley folk’ are descended from immigrants. They came to the area looking for work down the mines in the early/mid 19thC.
so in the last 12 years when you've voted Tory, what has justified your vote? What things have improved in your opinion?
We're still all descended from immigrants though. But if you're talking 50 years, I'm the son of a refugee who came to Barnsley just over 50 years ago to work in the mines. And who got dogs abuse for being an immigrant.
