What I find truly uplifting is that individuals now have the strength and courage to be themselves without judgement. There will be people, hopefully not on here, who may find the OPs statement abhorrent, but equally there will be more people who are supportive. The world has moved on and everyone should be able to be themselves.
The only problem I have with this post, is the unforgivable misuse of while/whilst. Absolutely no excuses for that. As with others I have known, living similar lives. Nothing is so clear cut, different for everyone, I’m sure. But to be so honest, particularly on a football forum, takes balls as big as the moon, whether you want them or not. Total respect.
Good luck to you Gravy and Chips. A very positive and brave post. I wish you all the best for the future.
A few years ago, Jeannie & I were trying to re-home a large, difficult dog, who had endured a sad, abusive, early life. I put a shout out on here & Gravy showed serious interest & we chatted privately about the possibility. I can’t remember why it didn’t work out & the dog did go to a good home. That’s by the by, but the brief exchanges definitely showed me something about this person’s character. & getting an animal via me is like going through the Spanish Inquisition. Funny, what you remember.. ‘Good luck’ isn’t the right thing to say. More- get on with your life & be happy. Biglil & I will don a frock of solidarity in the Ponty, I’m sure..
Great post Gravy I really feel for you and all the best in the future. And it's great the majority of this Board is with you.
I could not believe what I was reading when Gravy posted this thread. I have never met Gravy but I have spoke to him quite a bit via PM. What he and his family have had to endure over the years would astound you and believe me it’s something you would not want to happen to yourself. I can say no more other than it is all disgusting. Thanks Gravy for introducing me to Blind Guardian. I’ve had many hours of happy listening. All the best mate. Hope all goes well.
I don’t know what pronouns Gravy wants to use currently, but it seems like a good idea to me to not assume he/him as you have given the context of the OP.
I'd like to second this. I've also chatted with Gravy over pm about various issues that connect us, in particular the UK's draconian non-EU spouse immigration laws. Gravy has always come across as a hugely likeable and positive person, despite some of the crap that life has thrown in their direction. Gravy, after all you've successfully dealt with so far, I'm sure you're well equipped to deal with this biggest of challenges. Got everything crossed for you mate.
Yes, I made the point of using ‘person’ as reference. Though I did first think I was opening a thread about Pontiac Trans Ams.
I'm really glad you felt able to post your experience Gravy. As the saying goes, every day is a school day and I hold my hand up that there is a lot around the trans issue that I know very little about. As you say, the stuff on twitter etc is often very militant and I doubt it's reflective of the trans community as a whole.
Gravy Chips Well done you for sharing and well done the people on this board for the heartfelt responses. If you need to talk some more please PM me. My daughter lives in London. Her friendship group and her job bring her into close contact with the trans / queer community down there in which she is very much emotionally invested. I've just spoken to her about your post and she'd be happy to talk with you if you want. It could well be if benefit. x
As we have a tune for everything, my beloved Replacements. Shitkickers from Minneapolis. Here comes Dick, he's wearing a skirt Here comes Jane, y'know she's sporting a chain Same hair, revolution Same build, evolution Tomorrow who's gonna fuss And they love each other so Androgynous Closer than you know, love each other so Androgynous Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad And she don't need advice that's sent at her She's happy with the way she looks She's happy with her gender Mirror image, see no damage See no evil at all Kewpie dolls and urine stalls Will be laughed at The way you're laughed at now Now, something meets boy, and something meets girl They both look the same They're overjoyed in this world Same hair, revolution Unisex, evolution Tomorrow who's gonna fuss And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants And tomorrow Janie's wearing a dress Future outcasts and they don't last And today, the people dress the way that they please The way they tried to do in the last centuries
Great, thought provoking post. Thanks for putting it on here. I've just come back from a women's football game where players on the bench were discussing similar issues. It's made me think about what horrible abuse some of them receive for their hairstyles, interest in football etc. Some of them are gay, some of them are straight, some don't know, but without doubt some are in the wrong body. The point is they all love football - that brings us all together. I just hope football at the highest level can demonstrate the same empathy that is emerging elsewhere. I think there's a long way to go. Good luck to you.
Been off the board for a few days and saw this. What a fantastic OP. I must admit my heart sank when I saw it had got to 4 pages as I thought someone might have been a bit of a tool about it... I take it back. This place is brilliant when at its best! Best of luck GC!
an excellent and thought provoking post from a very erudite poster. Perhaps each of us should look at our own friends and families and reach out to anyone who we think may have the same or similar pressing issues as GC.
Glad you felt you could be so open as well as educating the rest of us. Whatever we all see ourselves as we are all Reds
