They are supposed to be professional athletes ......

...... they get paid a salary that reflects the sacrifices they are supposed to make.

That salary is paid by the likes of the us, with the current position in the table and recent performance is it too much to ask for them to be in peak condition for Saturday ????????????

They will be in peak condition, the game is 2 days away, they'll be fine. If not, lets moan about it after the game, they need our support now, not abuse. Anyroad, i very much doubt they were 'out of their heads'. Anyone got proof?

When we win on setdi, everything will be fine again.

not good when weve got "another cup final" on saturday! Maybe they should read this

For the sportsman, performance reduction due to alcohol can be dangerous as realisation of pain can be reduced when damage may be being created. The old story of the cowboy who was shot in the leg, drinking a bottle of Whisky prior to the bullet being removed is a vivid example of the situation. In the long term, the steady tippler can ultimately destroy the nerve endings passing to the muscles. While training in Otago, my first patient for me to present in the hospital situation to colleagues, was a patient in this situation and while not very obvious and in otherwise young and healthy sports people, it is something that is not to be looked forward to in the long term when a number of us will display a quiet breakdown of nerves as part of the aging process anyway.

Muscle strength and function can be impaired by alcohol. In the small areas of bruising within the muscle where normal chemical breakdowns are occurring, alcohol can speed this breakdown. In some cases, myoglobin, a chemical can be released into the blood stream. Myoglobin is a protein important in muscle structure. If released in large quantities, chemical damages can occur in the kidneys. Red urine can result, usually visible with a microscope but in the excessive alcoholic, it can be visible to the naked eye. Players inured in a game sufficiently to stop the game or come off are urged not to drink alcohol in order to recover quicker.

Fat is proving to be more and more essential in energy production for muscle activity. Also carbohydrates are required. Alcohol can destroy or reduce the ability to convert fat and carbohydrates into raw energy. Vitamin B complex which is sometimes taken in conjunction with athletic performance is broken down by alcohol. The normal reduction in cholesterol in the blood stream is reduced by alcohol in excess.

Vitamin C can also be lost in excess of sweating which alcohol may increase.

Any sportsman when tired knows that depletion of complex vitamins and minerals lead to quicker cramping both in the muscles and in the creation of stitch and stomach cramps. Risk of this is increased by absorption of excessive alcohol.

One of the most important elements required for sports performances is oxygen. The quicker a person can get oxygen to the cells of the body, the more efficient they will become in work output. Alcohol reduces the blood carrying capacity of oxygen to every single cell and so performance will drop in every sense if alcohol is consumed prior to activity.

As a student well remembered were the times, those who had not really followed the advice of the more sensible and had taken too much alcohol would often puff on the oxygen units within the hospital to try and restore some of the oxygen carrying capacity, merely to get through a day's work.

That may be permissible where work loads are not at a maximum, but where competition is life, it is hardly the wiser choice. Where inflammation due to other injury is concerned, uric acid can build up causing the area of local irritation to be worse than normal. Obviously, it is far more preferable for injury recovery to have the best base line of tissue possible.

While it is regarded as fair game to suggest that the usual National Rugby Team image is one of a hard playing, hard drinking team. it is my experience that most of the footballers while in heavy competition do not drink excessively. It is interesting to note that in the team session often following an All Black game, that compulsory drinking is noted. However, jugs of milk and orange juice are always on hand and the companionship and team unit, still being noted, not necessarily relying on the alcoholic content of drink to create this effect.

The relaxation effect from the central nervous system of a small quantity of alcohol can be regarded as beneficial. However, this must be balanced with the side effects of more than the reasonable quantity being consumed.

The sick should avoid alcohol at all costs, not only to enable liver recovery, but because of the general effects. In sound prevention of problems, one must consider the values of excessive drinking, compared with the physical performance one desires.

Some players tour without any alcoholic drinking, for easier maintenance of body weight and undue side effects on fitness. The denial process can be a great commitment to self discipline and alcohol can be one of the most deleterious intakes to abstain from for highest quick returns of good output. Believe it, try the converse have your beers before the game to see the effects if in doubt. Reason that the small efforts of abstinence warrant being a player of quality, something many desire and only the smallest group attain.

    So what whats the problem....................................

Nothing wrong with having a beer or too on the Wednesday before a Saturday match.

The players will be well rehydrated by then and in any case dehydration isn't a problem in these temperatures.
