it's pretty much galaxy tab or iPad JD. i wouldn't look elsewhere, the screen resolutions just aren't up to bigger screen size. £229 is pretty good value for a 10" really, when you compare it to iPad

i have a 10", but it would cost you a lot more than £229 quid.......chortle

Ignoring the last comment... I think I will have to go with the galaxy tab, I know it isn't much money in comparison. Also, to be fair to him, he did help me out a lot at uni, loaning me my rent money for each year in advance (all paid back now), and then contributing towards the wedding. He deserves far more than this, I just hope he will use it. He loves gadgety things though, and he's never off his laptop, so I'm fairly confident.

I was going to get a nexus for someone at home, til I was told it doesn't support BBM ....

13 / 14 yr olds still like it, as far as I can tell.

To be honest I don't really know what it is.

Before seeing this, I found this one instead Lenovo IdeaTab S6000 Tablet, Quad-core Processor, Android, 10.1", Wi-Fi, 16GB, Black

It is £179 from John Lewis so 2 year guarantee instead of the standard 1 year, compared all the specifications and it beat the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 in every area. Almost definitely decided on this one.

worth checking out reviews first. lenovo are laptop builders, and notorious for building big ugly things, with $hit loads of ports and bloatware.

Thanks :) I've watched a few youtube video reviews which seemed fine. It is slimmer than the Galaxy Tab 2, the extra useless software obviously isn't great, but I may be able to remove that. I did notice that the homepage didn't have the best layout. Saying that, he doesn't know any different, so wouldn't be able to compare it to a better layout. He's not the most tech savvy person in the world (despite liking new stuff), the most up to date thing he has is an old laptop, so I don't think he would even notice if it took 1 second to load a screen rather than it being instantaneous. I know there's better stuff out there, but for what he wants it for (literally facebook and Player), and the fact that a 1-2 second wait time for him will probably seem fast/normal, I think it'll be more than fine. I may just be being cheap though. Also, the only other alternative I can afford is the Galaxy, and this is actually better than that (although not as good as more expensive things).

Sorry for taking over Ade. Hopefully one of those I was considering may be useful for your wife too, at half the price of the ipad.

I've got a Nexus 7 (not the latest one) and I've been very impressed with it. I hadn't really had much experience of Android before but I'm massively impressed with it and after getting used to it on the tablet I got a Nexus 5 to replace an iPhone. As a bit of a tech geek its the best thing I've ever done and I now realise how restricted iPhones and iPads are.

As long as you avoid the really cheap android tablets you can't go wrong, my nexus 7 doesn't have a particularly fast processor (so I'm told) but its very responsive and plays high quality video no problem so I think it'll be good for another 12 months at least.

The benefit of getting a nexus tablet is you get the latest version of android as soon as it's released, a lot of other manufacturers take ages to release it to their devices - a lot don't actually bother to push out the new versions so you miss out on a lot of new features and performance improvements.

Just checked. It won't let you donwload it from the play store but it does work apparently. You just have to side load it.

I'd be very suprised if you do. We sold the Mrs's iPad 2 she got my retina IPad and I now have the new Nexus 7 and I think its great. The screen on it is fantastic and its such a great size and so light! It just feels much more usable than the 10" form factor. No regrets!

    Isn't Nexus Windows?
I know when I asked re Nexus in the shop they said it wasn't possible, and thought it wasn't likely either. Was a couple of months back, mind you.

Mmm... strange. They def told me Nexus was excluded but that the Android devices would be able to get BBM.

Good piece of advice! There are some pretty shocking low end Android tablets!

The Samsungs are also very nice pieces of kit so I wouldn't worry about it!
