Liverpool and United only have tiny scoreboards - no replays on them - United ones show the teams at the beginning then the score/time

Re: I remember confusing the Mansfield Town fans

The scoreboard in the 1960s was a manually-operated series of boxes with tin numbers for scores, which looked like a pigeon loft and was at what is now the away end of the ground. it could only display about twenty scores because that's how many holes there were to slot the scores in, so they used to have a display 1 and a display 2, so they could get about forty scores in. Its shortcomings really showed in the last game of the season (probably 1964, but I can't be bothered to check) when we were playing Mansfield Town in the old division three. We were already relegated, having sold Tony Leighton to Huddersfield half way through the season, but Mansfield needed to win and hope that Bristol City lost in order for them to be promoted. Mansfield won a surprisingly close game 3-2 and their fans then had to await the Bristol result. The key game came up that Bristol City had lost and the Mansfield fans invaded the pitch thinking they had just been promoted, but they did not notice that the display was board 1 and actually Bristol City had won. It was fun while it lasted , but did not amuse the Stags fans who had travelled to Oakwell in good numbers for the game. I thought that the 'not fit for purpose' old scoreboard added something to the occasion that day. Ah! The smell of the woodbines is coming back to me again!
