Off the top of my head, take your pick from the following: Racist abuse Vandalism inc broken seats and broken hoardings (at oakwell and away grounds) Abuse of stewards Organised anti-social behaviour Season ticket fraud (numerous incidents of saying a season ticket is lost or stolen, getting new tickets and another member of them using it) Pyrotechnics that have led to FA enquirers which lead to potential fines and increased police costs. We don't really find any of this acceptable so yeah we re firmly on the side of the club. For a bit more info. Before every game the clubs safety officer meets with the police and discuss the issues and intelligence for the coming game and issues around the previous game. The club are then asked what their plan is. If they club do nothing the police insist on bringing in extra policing. An extra 10 police will cost around £10K. For the Milwall game, if the police hadn't De-catagorised it we would have lost money on the game. I don't have to tell you this is a big issue to this football club going forward. The actions of a few idiots can potentially have a big impact on the clubs underlying budget. We don't believe this is correct. Obviously, it's easy to see this as some bullies picking on young lads if you don't see the full picture. By the way, Of the 6 people arrested at Donny. 5 were aged between 13 and 18. The other was 21. Oh on the subject of Jacob. It was rather disappointing to hear that he was abusing Doyles and the club on Twitter after we had stepped in to represent him and get his season ticket back. Sometimes you wonder why you bother.
Ah it's ok then. Let them get on with it. More police, more stewards, more FA fines. We can afford it with our mega budget!
Cheers Gally. The questions and frustrations from me come from a lack of transparency. Why haven't the club communicated this? If we're so rife with criminality why has it taken so long for any action to take place? What have the various FA reports found and recommended? Are the club/Trust challenging any of the reports or SYP requests? Also, not sure what the age of the supporters has to do with anything? I saw Jacob having a go at them on Twitter before he got advice - didn't see any then. If he did out of order but you can't blame him for being frustrated at having to go through it. And you bother because you're trying to do best for supporters and I know everyone appreciates that. None of the above is a go at you Gally, by the way.
Well I think this was one of the reasons that people have been frustrated. "Why are the big, nasty, stewards picking on these young lads?" Why don't they pick on someone their own age/size. Simple really. This is the age of the group causing the issues. This is the group the police have identified as risk for home and away games.
We're criminalising and pushing away our next generation of supporters and that worries me. If they're causing so many problems then the club & SYP need to think of another way of dealing with it because whatever they're doing isn't exactly working according to your list of previous incidents.
I'd be very surprised if this is the case, the club can't simply turn a blind eye for the reasons I have identified above. I will try and find out more info though.
Other ways have also been looked at. The club have written to the some of these kids parents and even had them in to the club. One parent even ripped up his sons season ticket when he found out what had been going on. I know what you are saying but believe me, the club aren't trying to drive away future fans but eventually they have to act when warnings/polite requests etc are simply ignored and the "we'll do what we want" attitude prevails.
Lack of stewarding is a joke in the North stand if they can't handle 3k plus they shouldn't sell the tickets, 20 lads spent the entire game in the camera gantry at the back, double standards been applied here don't care what anyone says.
Very true. I'm worried about our future with our current stewards. How many more away teams are going to get smoke canisters past stewards? It's not an isolated incident last night and the FA will have taken further note. If those carrying these were actually searched better we'd keep policing costs down.
Are you suggesting that was made up at Donny then? A young girl with asthma problems was treated for breathing difficulties - that is an irrefutable fact.
Based on no understanding of best practices employed by the stewarding company or what measures were put in place prior to the game or actions taken by the stewards and police?? Ok.
Fair enough Gally. My initial point about lack of transparency and such still stands, though. If the club are having so much trouble with a small select group then it needs to be communicated. On the other hand, if that small group aren't causing near as much trouble as SYP are claiming then they need to be challenged on it. Reading into it the club are getting **** from SYP - are other clubs getting the same agro? Are they right?
What apart from the racist abuse, vandalism , smoke cannisters etc etc that the club already know about? Seems like enough trouble to me???
Noticed a Leicester fan in twitter put something on the lines of... Barnsley away ale under stand sit where you want and smoke bombs. Think we're an easy target.
This is clearly a divisive issue and one can understand the varying perspectives to a degree. As a yound lad watching football in the 70s and generally throughout the early 80s the minorities idea of fun was to throw toilet rolls; ticker tape, bricks, spanners (regularly at bradford if i recall) and coins. The 90s generally saw a mass reduction in such behaviours as all seat stadia and better policing (inc banning orders and increased sentencing) came to the fore, with football in general becoming more family and media friendly. Now we have something new in the smoke cannister, a sinister introduction or a desire by the new generation of supporters to make for a more vibrant and colourful atmosphere? Of course our continental cousins have been employing such devices for decades and it appears to be accepted by the clubs and police. How many current sporting events especially finals are marked by a great pyrotechnic show leading to smoke billowing over the ground and into the stands? I personally miss the atmosphere of the 'olden days', without the missiles of course. Football watching has become so sterile and rigid over the past 15 years and the supporter has thus become accustomed to this. I think the smoke cannister is 'daft' and certainly a little juvenile, but as a middle aged man i really don't care either way and its rare occurrance certainly doesn't spoil my days entertainment.
