The only way a problem can arise here is if people do precisely that. It's disturbing how little people seem to know about credit creation and the means by which banks lend. The bank has never held in any real form the amount of money that its customers have in their accounts, and the entire system relies on us having confidence in it. If that disappears, then we have no banking system to speak of and the country is fcked. Northern Rock customers - there is no problem. The Bank of England has done what it is there to do. The only way a problem arises is if you create one!
