Remember when Champions league meant that, a competition for champions? This top 4 thing is rubbish for me, should be top 2 max and then any other places given to cup winners, the buggers might take them seriously then, therefore making it interesting for everybody.
I think it would give teams more to play for and reinstate the F.A Cup and League Cup as top competitions.
I'm not so sure, plus it takes away another European trophy for the clubs to try and win, negating the effect you're trying to create (I think )
If i'd seen my team win trophies recently, like City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool, then I'd pick Champions League football. If I were a Spurs, West Ham or Everton fan, I'd pick the trophy. Not sure about Leicester. That said, not sure how much a trophy win is worth behind closed doors.
Been a while since we have been at Oakwell South. FA Cup for me. If I was a shareholder / director my answer may be different. Talking as a fan.
The Champions League spot is much more valuable going forward. Winning the FA Cup might get you a few million quid, but it will mean nothing to your transfer targets. Finishing 4th can improve the quality of player willing to sign for your club, and if the club is run well could mean that you would be a challenger for the Premier League over the next few years. I hate to say it(as I still love the competition), but the FA cup will be looked upon more and more like the League Cup as the years progress, unless they give the winners the 4th Champion's League spot. You wouldn't see any team making 10 or 11 changes for their cup games like you do now from many of the Premier League clubs. It would also spice up the Champion's League if someone like Burnley or Palace won the FA Cup, and may even give a smaller, less glamerous team the resourses to break into the elite 6 or so teams that challange year in, year out(which is the reason the PL would never allow it, unfortunatly).
Personally what i think should happen is the winner of the FA cup plays 4th, winner get champions league, loser europa league. Would keep the league interesting, encourage teams to take the cup seriously, and potentially have another money spinning game for the FA to host at wembley. Everyones a winner.
A big problem is the gulf between the Champions League and the Europa League. The latter involves endless games against poor quality teams. The competition only really gets interesting at the quarter or even semi final stage. In contrast the CL offers much higher profile games from the off. It is about money but it’s also about wanting to see your team play against the best teams in Europe.
5th & a cup. I don’t get the mentality of football fans wanting champions league football over a trophy. I understand people in the board rooms having that attitude but fans shouldn’t. Arsenal had loads of season finishing top 4 after the mid-2000’s but I’m not even sure they ever got past the last 16. Seemed to get embarrassed at that stage for years. Spurs would be the same, if they scrape in they aren’t going far in it. They’d be much better off winning a cup which to be fair Mourinho’s targeted the league cup
I do think a lot of it comes from Sky Sports not having champions league or FA Cup coverage & we’ve now got a lot of fans who constantly watch Sky Sports news & it’s all premier league as if that’s the most important competition. I genuinely heard a fan on 606 the other day saying Liverpool aren’t great because they haven’t won back to back league titles & when Sutton pointed out they’d won the champions league & the league in back to back seasons he wasn’t impressed. In what world is the premier league a better competition to win than the champions league? It was only so big for Liverpool because they’d not won it for 30 years.
The Champions League has 2-3 qualifying rounds of rubbish teams like Linfield, Qarabag, Astana, Crvena Zvezda (Red Star), Molde, Dundalk, Connah's Quay and Celtic before you get to any decent games.
Depends if you qualify for the group stages of CL. If you do then the money could secure a small club's finances for a decade. I'd love to win the cup but the money and the idea of Barcelona etc coming to Oakwell is something else entirely.
