Safe standing area. Corner of the Ponty and West Stand, stick a roof on it to project the sound forward. No drums however.
The atmosphere at Oakwell went downhill when the Ponty became all seater and those making a noise were separated. It's still good when we're doing really well but, in general, the atmosphere for a run of the mill game is much quieter. If you want an atmosphere don't separate the ones that create it.
I find attempts to create atmosphere are generally pretty tedious. A good match day experience is more about the facilities and what happens on the pitch.
Start by moving changing rooms or split away end so teams don't hear away fans first shouldn't happen even Khaled says when only few hundred away fans can still only hear them in changing rooms
Improve people's general mood by improving the access to the stadium, the catering selections, the catering availability, the speed of catering service, the general state of the place, having a big screen that isn't a source of embarrassment, getting the ore match music right, timing the theme tune right etc. If people get to 3:05pm (because we as a club seem unable to get players onto the pitch in time for some reason) and already feel like the whole experience has been a drag then they aren't going to be in a mood to sing and chant. That's why TV shows have warm up guys to get the audience in the right mood. Then obviously show some passion on the pitch. Do those and the fans will sing, make people pissed off or generally in a bad mood and they won't.
Performances on the pitch often get blamed for the lack of atmosphere, but when we were in the top 2 when Stendel was in charge, it wasn't much more boisterous then. The only games which stick out from that season as having a good atmosphere, were Fleetwood and Blackpool at home. Fleetwood was nearing the end of the season, it was a feisty game, we scored 4 goals, and Coventry edged out Sunderland 5-4. The Blackpool game was the final home game, with a bumper crowd, and whilst we couldn't be promoted, we came from a goal down and results elsewhere went our way. Otherwise, the atmosphere was fairly flat that season, despite being unbeaten at home.
Can we get Hot Gossip to do some risque dance routines prior to kick off? Or failing that get the youth choir in to belt out some tunes - that'll get everyone going.
I'd love us to do what Huddersfield have done and make the "hard-core" bit right next to the away fans, split the north stand in half. Slight problem being that the rest of the ground will look pretty empty.
Fill in the sides. Acoustically the layout of the ground is clearly detrimental to atmosphere and was never intended to be left as it is. Safe standing might help gather there more noisy elements together more. I’d have that in the current away end and move away fans into West Stand. Product on the pitch. A proper space for supporters to meet, eat and drink pre and post match
