If you have supported the club for 50 years, you will remember John McSeveney's tenure. Before you complain about recent events, just cast your mind back to his tenure and convince me that it is worse now than then. John McSeveney has saved me thousands, because he convinced me not to attend away games after I saw us lose 3-0 at Notts County on our way to Division 4. I have been an infrequent visitor ever since.
My first game was against Newcastle in the cup when I was about five. Must have been 4, or 5 at the time and that would have made it 1955 or around then. I remember nowt about it other than someone took my rosette from me and I cried. That was the only game my dad took me to. I was allowed to go to games with my mate when I was around 8. First game I saw was against QPR, we lost 0-3 in division 3. Seem to remember us losing to Bradford PA 1-5 the same season. That means I've followed them for around 60 years if you count the Newcastle match. I also have suffered more than most. The thing I remember most of all that time is the buzz and the expectation when Clarkie came. He was young and had a "go for it" attitude. We unrealistically gad the best team in division 2 not long afterwards. If the load is too heavy for Patrick, and I can understand why it may be, then we need to find an additional benefactor. I went to school with Patrick and he has my absolute respect. The questions are always, what do we need? And how can we do it?
So let's sum up our club strategy. 1. Cut costs, particularly wages. 2. To do so, bring in players from lower league/non-league clubs in the hope they will turn out OK. 3. Watch performances suffer. 4. See the crowd decline. 5. Get relegated. 6. Return to Step 1. 7. Hope something turns up. Hope I haven't missed something.
Nope, I'm not having that. If that's anybody's definition of acceptable we might as well close the chuffing thing down and do something else on a Satdi afternoon.
As things stand we have slid further down the League with Scunny currently beating Mk Dons but never mind its all acceptable cause its part of Danny's Masterplan to take is into League 2
I assume you are directing your question at me. Of course I remember the McSeveney era but I'm not clear what that has to do with the debate regarding realistic expectations.
