I was born in Chesterfield, Dad from Hoyland Common, Mam from London. Raised in Hoyland, supported the Reds from a young age. Left at the end of the 80's for London still a teenager, rather than waste away on the dole. I've been call everything from "not a proper Yorkshireman", "deserter" and "soft southern cnt" on this bored and all sorts of insinuating ***** in between. Have certainly done more and know more about life, than I would have done had I stayed.
I know at least 5 season ticket holders who are not from Barnsley and have moved here but watch and support their newly adopted local team. One family are often divided when we play Watford!
I was born in the town that cannot be named (mainly cos the profanity checker objects to S****horpe!) and moved to Barnsley at 9. My dads family are from this area. My first football matches were Scunny v Liverpool and Tottenham in pre-season friendlies around 80 or 81 when both visitors were top sides (league champions and cup winners respectively IIRC). My first Barnsley game was a 0-1 defeat to Cardiff at home in around 82 and I was hooked.
