    Here's my selection

Historically (only includes players I saw in the flesh as it were)

Best player - tossup between George Best and Johan Cruyff
Best English Player - Bobby Charlton
Best Barnsley Player - Who else but Ronnie Glavin
Best individual performance in a match - Jinky Jimmy Smith (Newcastle Vs Liverpool 1978/9 season when I was a student at Newcastle, he tore Liverpool to bits when they were top team in Europe, The Toon won 4-1)

    Currently

Messi by miles - I'd love to go and see Barcelona, however, I will be going to Madrid to see Atletco vs Granada a week on sunday for my son's 18th birthday treat.
Scott Parker I suppose but he's not great is he?
Jim O'Brien - I can't include Butterlicious cos he might never play for us again.

Why join in just to have a dig (ahem) at Hemsy? Bullying, nothing more, nothing less.

Add George Best as the best British/Irish player I've seen and I agree with you. Did you see Pele play for Santos at Swillsbrough (1971-ish)?

I totally agree with you re. George Best

My Dad took me to the Sheffield Wednesday/Santos game to see Pele (as you say, 1971ish). It was the first game I had gone to that didn't involve Barnsley. Unfortunately, I can't remember a thing about the game!

Santos match was Feb 1972, Santos won 2-0 and it was played at 2.30pm because of Mining strike. Or did you mean the previous match in 1962 Santos won 4-2 and Pele scored a penalty that match. I know you are older than me so it could have been the 1962 match!!:p:p:p

    Good evening young sir

Hope all's well at your end.
If you've got the dates right, we had numerous days off school at the time due to not having enough coal to heat all the school for five days a week. Which would explain why my Dad took me to the game. We got relegated at the end of that season, too.

What do you mean "IF" ? It was 23rd Feb, I know because I was listening to Radio Sheffield last manday and Gerry Kersey was talking about it.
I had no recollection of the match happening at all before that.
I knew that bit of uselless info would come in handy eventually.

I went to school in Sheffield (not easy being a lad from Barnsley). They gave us the afternoon off on condition we went to the match. One of only 4 games I've been to that didn't involve Barnsley.
