Good to see see you on the forum. I do believe that other famous Dutchman formerly of these parts, Arjan DeZeeuw, also lived in Darfield.
You really are far to sensible to be posting on here Welcome and I look forwards to some intelligent football posts
My friend has mentioned him quite a few times. He's been a season ticket holder for over 20 years, so he's seen a few players come by. He also mentioned Laurens ten Heuvel and Carel van der Velden. There have been more (and he's mentioned more), but De Zeeuw has definitely been mentioned the most of the former barnsley Dutch players. I hope I can make my contribution. Find 10 football fans and you'll have 11 opinions. I suppose that's what makes it interesting!
Aye fair do's, it were a failed attempt at humour of which I seem to have a good record on tbh Anyway look forward to reading your views on how we played a d players etc. By the way do you know Carlo Van De watering he's originally from the Netherlands although if you met him you wouldn't know as he has a very strong worsbrough accent nowadays.
Good old De Graafscapp Fc eh, Im sure we've all supported them at one time or another. We had a great Dutch player once called Arjan De Zeeuw, what would we do to have him in the team now eh!! And we also had Robin Van Der Laan but lets forget about him lol.
I think there are definitely some similarities between De Graafschap en Barnsley FC, which has made BFC the only team outside of my home town I support. Both clubs are no-nonsense. Both clubs aren't from a big city. The stadium of De Graafschap is somewhat English in style, with fans sitting close to the action. And there are opportunities for the youth players to step up and try and break into the first team (although they're not quite as strict on their young player policy as BFC seems to be at the moment). And most of the staff consists of locals and/or former players. So it's well rooted in the community. I'm not ashamed to admit that that one went right over my head.
Uhh, thanks, I guess. (It's "ik" by the way, this spelling is German.) I believe he was part of the setup that got promoted to the Premiership, right? That must've been a pretty decent team in general.
What Ive always liked about the Dutch team is they play in orange, forget all that total football, I like the nice bright colourful kit. If its good enough for Blackpool then it must be good enough for Holland as well. And also, do you all prefer to be called Holland or Netherlands ?. Apart from Ajax (of Amsterdam) I don't know much at all to be honest about Dutch club football.
It's from a song called The Only Living Boy In New Cross by a band called Carter USM, the USM bit standing for the Unstoppable Sex Machine. Check out their album called 1992 The Love Album if you want to broaden your knowledge of working class life in London, and seriously challenge your English language comprehension skills!
Feyenoord is a much better day out, Ajax is full of day trippers with a very poor atmosphere. Feyenoord fans are just mental, friendly but mental. That's pretty much the extent of my Dutch football knowledge
I thought the cheese heads were/are the Green Bay Packers. It might have been said many times but where did we sign Arry DZ from ?.
I like that it's pretty distinct from most other teams. Internationally only Ivory Coast play in orange as far as I know. And yes, it does brighten up the streets/stands with Dutch fans around. While we generally accept people saying Holland, it's actually a misnomer. It's a bit like saying English when you mean British. There's a short but interesting video about it: I'll have a listen. Though being in Yorkshire can be a serious challenge on language skills as well at times! The Amsterdam ArenA is a bit generic. And you get to sit miles away from the pitch (so you might as well just watch it on TV). Their old stadium (De Meer) was way better, but like many stadiums it was deemed not good enough for modern times. I think there are appartments now where it used to stand. I think Feijenoord's stadium might be alright, but I've never been there myself.
Feyenoord is a fantastic atmosphere, although the local council have accepted and pushed through plans to build a new stadium, unfortunately. Not a very popular decision at all!
