These are the local council elections so for me it's more how the council and its elected members listen to the community.

Labour are on thin ice in many parts of Barnsley as they simply ignore major concerns from residents, with little or no justification for doing so.

The decisions made on road planning around the Wickes/Asda area are crazy, traffic flow has never been as bad down there. They didn't listen to residents concerns and are putting plans in place to add an extra lane on one section to cause more congestion at the exits.

Penny pie Park another example of massive local opposition and the councillors just rubber stamped it. All that new faux roundabout has done is remove a few trees, reduce greenspace and ultimately move the congestion further down towards townend.

Huddersfield Road getting resurfaced between wilthorpe and redbrook when there were far far more deserved roads in horrible shape, still can't work out how that made top of the list, even though it's one of the main roads into town.

Crazy road closures during Barnsley matches, bringing the roads to a standstill, not even opened up whilst the match is in play.

Anti social behaviour on the up again, especially break ins to cars and properties. Obviously the police have to look at their local policing strategy, along with government funding on that one.

I reckon Labour could be in for a tough time, not from the Tories but maybe the Fib Dems, Greens and Indies.

Regardless of party when it comes to local coincil elections, I'd always vote for the person who wants the best for their local community and someone who lives within the area they stand in, someone who doesn't just wait until election time to post a leaflet of them planting a tree in a park to show how hard they have worked in their tenure.

As for the mayoral one, obviously they won't even need a count on that one, Labour candidate will roll in virtually unopposed. Think we are yet to see what that this mayoral role with its limited powers can actually achieve anyway.

 

Because the traffic using those exit slips can only access parts of Pontefract Road and Kendray Street that aren’t open. There’s no point keeping the slip road open if you can’t go anywhere at the end of it.

 

Yes but why can't they go down Pontefract road to Oakwell? It's not like the road is full of pedestrians as the bridge and jumble lane is all closed off. Instead both pedestrians and cars are forced into lambra road which isn't suitable for such large numbers together. They've actually made it more dangerous

 

I think this is part of the problem, unfortunately people who supported corbyn won't vote for Kier, and vice versa. I've never seen so many Labour supporters throw their hat into the tory pool because of Corbyn. There's a massive split in the Labour camps, not always voting tory, but splitting the Labour vote either way, meaning tories come out on top. Although supposed to be a lot of change down south with support for Kier. Who can guess ey

 

I’m interested to see the results that’s for sure. I know a lot of voters in and around Birdwell and Hoyland Common seem to think voting Tory is a better prospect because they’re unhappy with the developments in the area

 

The official advertised pedestrian diversion routes are:

Eldon Street and Schwabish Gmund Way
or
Cheapside, Wesley Street, and Lambra Road.

Eldon Street and Schwabish Gmund is a much shorter diversion than the latter (for those that previously used the level crossing and haven’t changed their pre/post match arrangements as a result of the closure). There’s also home and away fans travelling via public transport and using the interchange so that’s plenty of pedestrians using Kendray Street and the section of Pontefract Road up to Bala Street to warrant closure. Even when the road wasn’t officially closed I’ve witnessed loads of fans walking in the carriageway.

Anyway, this is hijacking a thread about local elections so it’s probably better to stay on topic.

Indeed. Spain is suffering economic issues just as the UK is, especially around petrol prices.
So a few weeks ago the Spanish government, recognising that high fuel prices also raised food and retail prices, announced a 20 cents a litre discount, with a further 10 cents off if you used a particular chain of petrol retailers.
This price cut is fully funded by the government and has been a huge benefit to the economy.
A few weeks ago I was paying 1.57 per litre, now I pay 1.27
Transport and distribution costs have risen only slightly because of the price cut, which means food and other essentials have risen only slightly.
Nobody is propping Spain up!, and as you say Old Gimmer, people are falling for the Daily Heil rubbish

Even if that were true, the answer is probably not to doom our country to failure out of protest.

It's like sh1tting the bed as a protest at hotel service and then realising you now have to sleep in a shat bed.

 

Why do we have to accept it? If circumstances and opinions have changed why can't the decision be re-examined?

 

What's been extremely strange down here is the absolute lack of campaigning.

4 years ago, we got bombarded with flyers and on the final day, we had 10 people knocking on the door, 6 of them Labour! I vote by post so it makes no odds, but this time round, we've not had one single flyer or one single knock on the door and down the street, there isn't one single political poster or placard.

Weird.

 

They would rather have a empty muddy green field,than employment, that's how stupid people are. This town needs jobs,it needs people to stop having a lifestyle paid for by the tax payer,while others go to work, often in low paid jobs. There are nearly 2000 jobs coming on stream in the next 18months in the Barnsley area. Sadly, most of them will be filled by people commuting.in.

They did. They just decided that the wider public interest required a different decision to be made.
