i don't disagree

And Odejayi's goalscoring record is indefensible. I just think that the things he does do well go unnoticed. To say he is our worst striker ever is a bit unfair when most would agree he's not the worst striker at the club presently. He's getting a game as he is the best of what we have. In a way he gets in too many good positions because I think bizarely he wouldn't be so unpopular if he didn't get in goalscoring positions as people would focus on what he does well

I did say in an earlier post

I've seen far worse strikers play for Barnsley, based on ability. However, in my opinion, it's difficult to see how Simon Davey can persist with Kayode for much longer.

(Genuine questions) Who would you play instead at the moment? Do you think he warants a place in the squad? Personally I would keep him in the squad as back up to Macken or a different option as he has pace. I really rate Macken and wasn't having a g o at him earlier but he has missed sitters too when we could have won (Bristol City) but to be fair to him his job isn't to bag loads of goals, it should be the Phillips type striker. My worry is that unless you get lucky with a loan signing (Frazier Campbell) we haven't the money to attract proven goalscorers. Would have liked us to have taken a chance on Patterson though, he's justifying his price tag at Burnely

As it stands at the moment

I'd go for Macken & Cureton as our main two strikers. But I don't have any confidence with our back up forwards to make anything like a meaningful contribution. Simon Davey chose to bring these players to our club and has no option but to persist with their selection on the bench. Even if Cureton's transfer is made permanent, I'd still like to see another striker brought in during January, preferably one who brings a physical presence AND goals.

Yeah I agree with Macken and Cureton, although I think I'd prefer more of a clever, quick striker. I think Davey hasn't done well in the striker department. Although bar Hume he has been shopping in the bargain basement. £200k for Odejayi is absolutely nothing and he won't be on good wages. You get what you pay for ultimately. Unfortunately I don't think if all the money for KO, Mossto and Christensen had been spent on one player it would have been enough to buy a prolific striker

We've rarely had a prolific striker

In my five decades of watching Barnsley. However, for the money spent on the aforementioned forwards, I think we could have brought in a 12 to 15 goals a season man. That could be the difference between a relegation battle and mid table security.

    Nowhere near the worst

but I wouldn't pick him in the starting line up.
There have been alot of very average strikers in my time watching football.
Willie Ferry; Mike Turner; Deon Burton (THE worst!); John Pearson; Dave Regis.

What Oddjob does, (even if he can't score to save his life) is he causes problems - defenders don't like him & invariably he occupies at least 2 of them. He causes havoc in the penatly area (more by luck than by craft), but more often than not, when he is on the pitch, something will happen - a chance, a mistake etc.

If he played with a little more belief & finesse he could be an asset, but I would only ever use him as a sub now... not good enough at this level unfortunately, shame because he could scare defences to death.

    Another thing about ODJ

I can think of at least 4 occasions at home this season that he should have had a penalty.

Not sure if you'd call it bad luck or whether he should be more "canny" i.e. "make a meal of it" more often, but if we'd have had all 4 pens the table would have looked alot more different, and we'd be judging his contributions alot more favourably. I can't think of another Reds player who has had so many clear cut penalties turned down.

No - we've had a lot worse than him

Look at some of he names mentioned above - been supporing Barnsley for 30 years and we've never had a regular golascorer who has regularly hit the back of the net - if we did Geddis, Ward etc then they were snapped up pretty quickly!

Hed make a F*****G brilliant defender

    Defensive qualities:

    1. Hes fast-pace-speedy, whatever you want to call it. Cant deny that.
    2. He doesnt have to take shots and could just kick the ball upfront as much as he likes.
    3. Doesnt have to look at the opposition goal keeper!

    Who agrees!?

On the number of games he has played....................

and his very poor goals return he has to be one of the worst I have seen since the late 50s.

Anyone who can see a footballer in the lad is either easily pleased or clueless, IMHO.

    Davey's worst mistake?
