I blame Thatcher

They always used to say that if Barnsley wanted a new player all you had to do was stand at the top of the mineshaft and shout. That's how we got Mick Butler (who I'm surprised to see missing off the list - Mick Speight too).

Thatcher closed all the pits - ergo it's her fault. The bitch.

    Blimey !

Fancy me missing one of my 3 all-time favourite Barnsley players off the list. Yet another example of my senility.

    Whats wrong with Atkinson

For my money he was shaping into a perefect Centre Half we needed. Why did we ship him out ??? He's done well at Grimsby.

Its something that I always took great pleasure in

Watching the fortunes of a local lad who had been 'ripped untimely' from the Oakwell womb.

Its also fun to laugh ones socks off at a 'big club' who were persuaded tp part with large portions of hard earned for someone who was basically a bit wnak.
I'm thinking Tilers and Curries to name but two

    Good question.

But I prefer it when you post pictures of large-breasted young females.

But Potter and Butterfield are starting to break through. Also in the days of bigger squads it is harder. Wehn the Hirst's of the world broke through we only had squads of about 16. Now they are much bigger meaning that players like Atkinson have to go out on loan to learn their trade and break through at 21 and 22. Obviously if we unearth a Rooney he would be playing younger but this happens very rarely

Spoilt it for our own lads and the national side by saturating all teams with foreigners.

the problems lie in the schools where all sports activities are not as good as they were in the days you are mentioning. if you are not teaching the kids from an early age then all they do is go straight home and are on the electronic devices and computers or are out leading the neighourhood a bloody merry dance. what the country needs is some discipline and the kids made to tow the line. bring back conscription and hanging. there.

    Yes there is...........................................

but I don't think the Club has the resources to put large amounts of money into local Junior football. Man United have a vast scouting network which we can't match. The Man Utd and the Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools are part of this network.

I don't think there was ever a golden era for local talent. It was the norm for most Clubs to produce most of its own talent before the Premier League was formed to cream off the TV money for a select few.

Things have changed now. The players we see in the Championship and the odd one or two in League One would have been playing in the Old 1st Division. 1st Division teams were lucky if they had 2 or 3 players, who had played for there Country, now the majority of Premiership players are Capped.

Some of the players you name were hardly top class players.
Winstanley for instance only played Division 2 and 3 football. I don't think he would have got into our present side.

We are a small Club with a small catchment area.

One of the problems is that not enough time is spent by Coaches developing players in the 5-8 age group. Note, I use the term develop. Much more time should be spent concentrating on technique than is done at present. There is still too much focus on winning rather than developing players and the eldest players in each year group who are often the biggest and strongest are the ones who get a game every week.

The FA and McDonalds are trying to address the issue with its new skills initiative. Specific coaching to match the age group of the player is being brought in. The FA have appointed regional Coaches to specifically develop the game at lower age groups.

Money is also a problem for many people. There are two many people taking more out of the game than they put in. How many can afford to pay £85 for a Days coaching which is what the Beckham Academy is charging.

Our own Football in the Community scheme charges kids for their coaching. Why can't this be free?

    NO !!!!!!

What is lacking in my opinion only, is an Academy capable of spotting the talent, nurturing such talent, and a will to give said talent a chance. Talk to folk who have kids at other Academies, and ask why they aren't at Barnsley's.........

If Mark Beevers had been at Barnsley he'd have never got near the 1st XI and would currently be on loan at Halifax Town in my humble opinion only.
